    Hell on earth

    I can recall growing up in the nineties in Detroit.  It was no joke. Drugs filled our streets, Killers hid in the shadows of the night. Just waiting for an unsuspected person to walk past. Anyone could get it. People were fair game. To a reckless killer.

    The craziest times in our city was Mischief week. It was the last week in October when our city shut down. Curfew began as soon as night fell. Around 7 pm. Anyone under the age of eighteen was forced in the house.

    They told us it was for our own protection.  They gave the police the right to lock anyone caught roaming after hours the hell up. Helicopter spotlights floated from above, observing us as if we were all under suspicion.    The worst of mischief week occurred on the final days 30th and the 31st. What most called  All Hallows Eve, and Halloween We called Devils night and Hell day.  The two days that the streets were infested with looters, thieves, and yes even killers.

    They all had one mission in mind. To cause as much havoc to the city as humanly possible.

    That they did, for almost twenty-five years. Men and women would dress in hoods, and mask, taking all they wanted. Hurting anyone in their paths, and burning it all down, not leaving a smidgen of evidence in the hell they left in our city.
