THE POWER OF STRUCTURE
Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work.
— Gustave Flaubert
Many of the world’s most productive, creative and successful people have rigorous daily routines.
From Beethoven, who after arising at 6 A.M., counted out by hand exactly 60 beans for his morning cup of coffee; to Franz Kafka, who slept for three hours twice a day and did his writing in the middle of the night; to Richard Branson, who leaves his bedroom’s curtains open and rises with the sun; to Tony Robbins, who swears by jumping into a pool of freezing water as soon as he gets out of bed of a morning.
While not all daily routines are quite as quirky as those mentioned above, there is one element that all daily routines have in common: they’re lethally effective.
When used right, a daily routine can be a highly effective tool for quickly and efficiently progressing toward your goals.
Daily routines are powerful for numerous reasons. Here are just four of the reasons why developing a daily routine can dramatically improve your life.
1.Consistently get everything done.A daily routine makes sure everything gets done. It’s like the difference between scheduling a doctor's appointment versus having a long list of wishy-washing items on a to-do list. The former will get done while the latter will likely remain incomplete. Having a daily structure gives order to your life and makes you that much more effective.
2.Quickly install
new habits. When you have a consistent routine, it’s very easy to add something new by sandwiching
it between two existing activities. When your days are largely unstructured, however, it can be very difficult to establish new habits.
3.Kickstart your day and be proactive rather than reactive.Perhaps the most famous part of establishing a daily routine is developing an empowering morning routine—and the popularity of morning routines is not unfounded. With the right morning routine, you can start your day powerfully and proactively, leaving you energized and productive for the rest of the day.
4.Focus on systems rather than goals. While goals are nice, they’re not half as important as what you need to consistently do to achieve those goals. Put simply, it is better to focus on the process rather than the outcome. An inadvertent consequence of having a routine is that you consistently focus on the process of achieving your goals.
Now that you’ve learned some of the benefits of a daily routine, read on to discover the best way to kickstart each day: with an energizing and empowering morning routine.
