Introduction
To be truly successful, you must first decide what you want to achieve. That is to say, you won't be able to get what you want in life until you've determined exactly what you want.
This is where goal setting comes into play. To have a chance at living your life to the fullest and achieving your full potential, you need to have a goal and know exactly what you want to accomplish.
Isn't it simple? Wrong!
Writing goals is an art in and of itself. There is a clear 'right way' and a 'wrong way' to write a goal. And if you approach goal setting incorrectly, you can actually reduce your chances of reaching those goals. That's right: a bad goal will actively work against your success.
Conversely, if you write your goal correctly, it can completely change your chances of success and help you to carry out all of the necessary steps to execute your plan much more reliably.
How do you go about accomplishing a goal? This includes not only the methodology and wording, but also the content. Because there is another possibility if you write your goals incorrectly: you may end up achieving those goals but not being satisfied with what you've accomplished.
In this book, we'll look at how to set the right goals and then follow through on them...
Chapter 1: Setting Goals That You Will Be Passionate About
Whether you're reading a self-help book or a motivational poster, the most common piece of lifestyle advice we hear is don't give up on your goals.
'Live your dreams,' 'chase the rainbow,' 'the sky is the limit,' 'never give up'... We've all heard it a thousand times.
And this is a lovely platitude. It is certainly true that we should not give up on our dreams, and that we can achieve anything we set our minds to.
So, what is the issue with this advice? Why is it falling flat? Why hasn't it inspired the majority of us to go out and become billion-dollar rock stars and business owners?
The answer is that this is a meaningless platitude that omits the most important points. We're all aware that we must persevere in order to achieve our goals. The more difficult part is determining how to choose worthwhile dreams in the first place.
What if you don't know what you want to do with your life?
What if your ambitions are completely unrealistic? What if two of your goals are diametrically opposed?
Some people are fortunate enough to have a single, unambiguous goal. They have one true passion that makes them truly happy. And this makes it much easier for them to remain committed and dedicated.
Someone who has always wanted to be a professional athlete and thus spends all of their free time training to be the best is an example of this.
Someone who has always wanted to be a chiropractor, a marine biologist, or anything else is another example.
In any case, these people have the opportunity to focus on their goals from the start and see them through to completion.
