How are your eggs, Rob? my wife Dana asks as she smiles at me from across the small table in a local cafe.

I shrug my shoulders.  They’re fine.  I scoop up a small pile of the creamy eggs and put them into my mouth.  As I chew, I look around at the other diners enjoying an early Saturday morning meal.

"Just fine?"  Dana giggles as she bats her brilliantly blue eyes in my direction.  We have been married for more than eight years and I still get a few goosebumps because of the way she looks at me sometimes.  I do not deserve her, especially not today, as I lament the small article that has been written in the local newspaper about me.

I’m good, my love, I reply as I smile back at her.  Everything is just fine.

Dana sighs.  Are you still upset that you didn’t get that upper management job?  That was weeks ago and they have just recognized you as one of their most valuable employees at the company, sweetheart.  You should be happy and thankful for what you have.

That job was mine, I tell my wife as I shake my head.  I know I should be happy that they gave me a small plaque and a gift card for this damned thing, but I also know why I got the award, Dana.  They are just trying to placate me after I complained to Mr. Ward about not getting that job.

Rob, it just wasn’t meant to be.  There will be a better opportunity soon.  You should be happy that they named you as their top human resources manager.

I look up at my wife and want to be angry, but I find it very hard to do so.  Still, mustering whatever disgust I have for my current employer, I reply, "There are only two of us, Dana.  Two fucking human resource managers.  What does it mean that I am named their top one?  Nothing.  Not a fucking thing.  What a joke the award is."

Dana looks around nervously before telling me in a hushed voice, Don’t be so loud, alright?  I don’t want someone to hear you dropping those f-bombs and the owners then tossing us out of here after a customer complains.

They won’t do that, I say before shoving another bite of eggs into my mouth.  I should be more thankful that my wife has taken me out for breakfast this morning, but her reason for doing so was that I won the award for best human resources manager.  But I am one of only two.  Who the fuck gives out awards like that?

Just be civil, Rob.  Almost a command in the way she delivers it, I realize that Dana has tired of my pity party.  It is time to pull it back in and return to adulthood.  For her, I would do anything.

I wish I had started that online business already, I tell my wife after taking a drink of orange juice.  If I was my own boss I wouldn’t have to worry about what a group of twats decide in a closed managerial meeting.

"Twats?  Really?  Dana giggles as she shakes her head.  Come on, Rob.  You know I would support you if you were to decide to start your own business.  Have you decided what it is that you would like to do online that could make money?"

Shaking my head, I reply, I have some ideas, but the problem is that it takes money to get something started.  We don’t have enough money to do that, so I haven’t yet tried to put anything definitive together.

You can plan without the money, she says with a frown.  We have talked about this before, Rob.  You don’t need money to put something on paper and to begin working toward a goal.  You of all people should know this.  My wife is right.  I have an MBA and yet I do not use it the way that I should to my own advantage.  As a human resources manager, I have become too comfortable with accepting the small salary and upper management that overlooks talent in exchange for job security.  I hate my job.  I really hate my job.

    I move my
