When We Pray - Latoya Brewington

    lives.

    Chapter 1

    What Is Prayer?

Over the years I have read and been taught about prayer and the role that it plays in the lives of those who have a relationship with the Lord. During these times, I’ve seen or heard prayer defined as:

•A solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship.

    •An earnest hope or wish.

•A dialogue and relationship with God that has power to change one’s heart and change an entire nation.

•The practice of the presence of God or talking to God.

•Doxology, praise, thanksgiving, confession, supplication and intercession to God.

I personally conclude prayer to be communication or conversation between a person and God, which yields spiritual growth, maturity, discipline, and manifestation of God’s great power and ability. Because of this, prayer is a necessity in the lives of God’s people.

We see this in Genesis 3:8-24 (NIV), when God began speaking in the Garden of Eden to Adam and Eve who hid themselves. Through this discourse, God is expressing Himself or communicating with them as He had done so on a daily basis. We know there was prayer in the garden because Adam responds and tells God, I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid. God communicates back asking, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?

I’m sure that some of you reading this book have been taught various things about prayer. I am not writing to credit nor discredit what you’ve been taught. I’m writing to aid you in establishing an effective and consistent prayer life. I want you to realize that prayer is not mystical or spooky; nor is it reserved for the best of the best or perfect people, but simply your time of speaking to God. While there are various postures and types of prayers, the most important thing is that you engage in prayer.

Great things happen as a result of prayer. We experience the glorious presence of God, His love and power, effectively learn to help others grow in their relationship with the Lord, and even lead others into a relationship with God. We develop discipline through prayer so that we please God in our daily living. And, we see miracles, healing, deliverance, and manifestation in our lives and others lives when we pray.

As you continue through the chapters of this book I pray (earnestly hope) that you will be motivated in your spirit and heart to communicate with God. I desire that you will gain the courage to talk to God about your life, your needs and desires, and even about the needs and desires of others.

God expects us to communicate with Him. Hebrews 4:16 (Amplified Bible) says,

Therefore let us [with privilege] approach the throne of grace [that is, the throne of God’s gracious favor] with confidence and without fear, so that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find [His amazing] grace to help in time of need [an appropriate blessing, coming just at the right moment].

Don’t forsake your privilege to converse with God. He wants to hear from you and is waiting to extend you grace and to help you in your time of need. You’ll see great things
