Taking It By Force - Kunita Kline

    Introduction

I love prayer. When I first gave my life to Christ, all I wanted to do was pray. I was amazed at how prayer from the privacy of my bedroom could impact the other side of the world. I would see and hear of situations that saddened or angered me and I felt that prayer was my ammunition. I remember reading Luke 10:19—Behold, I give you the authority to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means harm you. (NKJV)"—and thinking, THIS was powerful! I thought, I have inside access to shake the forces of hell off my life, and the lives of the people I love. I can pray for healing, salvation, miracles—whatever the situation requires, I am going to stand in the gap!

For the past seventeen years, I have carried many roles within the church—Youth Minister, Director of Women’s Ministry, Altar Worker, Intercessory Prayer Leader, and Minister. Of all these though, I can say that prayer for me, has always been the most fulfilling. I’ve always been drawn to read books that teach on prayer, spiritual warfare, and the Holy Spirit. I would continually ask the Lord to teach me how to pray. I read many good books. However, most of my education on prayer came straight from the word of God. And as a direct result, I have seen my relationship with God grow deeper, as well as my prayer life flourish.

Because of this, I’ve been asked many times how I learned to pray and what advice I would give to someone who wants to learn to pray effectively. I always point people to the word of God. Many think that effective, powerful prayer is the ability to pray strong, boisterous, and passionately. There is the tendency to think that if you pray in a softer manner that your prayers have less impact. Praying loudly or softly has nothing to do with the impact of your prayers. Your personality determines your style of prayer. Me praying at the top of my lungs does not mean that my prayers will accomplish more than the person who prays in a quieter tone. What makes prayer effective is praying in accordance with the word of God—scripturally.

The scriptures are our premise for prayer. I remember a time where my family was under extreme financial distress. This was such a tough time for me that although I knew we needed God’s intervention, I felt I did not even have the words to pray. I picked up my Bible and paced the floor, crying out to God. I turned to Psalm 23 and began praying, Lord, I thank you that you are my Shepherd; I shall not want. You make me to lie down in green pastures... I went on until the end of the chapter. Psalm 23 became my prayer in that moment. It was as if the words I was speaking hit the core of my spirit. I went from desperate to confident! I received an assurance in my heart that what I desired and prayed was done for me—just as sure as I was standing there. I discovered in that moment that God’s word is his contract to us. He watches over his word to perform it. If I am praying his word and in alignment with it, I obligate God’s attention to the situation. When I speak and declare the word of God over a circumstance, I then release God to act on my behalf! He is his word (John 1:1).

This is how I began to learn the effectiveness of praying God’s word. I developed a
