    It wasn’t my fault, Freddie Figg insisted, nodding his head quickly as he said it, as if that would make him seem more serious.

    The girls’ bathroom had been a mess when Principal Wills walked in. The lock had been broken and he had needed to fetch a janitor to let him in, but that had been nothing compared to the mess inside the bathroom. All but one of the stall doors had been hanging open, and three young ladies had been tied up in toilet paper in the middle of the floor, while Freddie stuffed chocolate into their mouths.

    So I didn’t walk in on you trying to stuff those poor girls like piñatas? Mr. Wills asked flatly, as he escorted Freddie to the main office. "Because if not, you’ll need to explain that one to me. I’m very sure that is what I saw."

    Freddie heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes. Honestly, why did grown-ups always need to jump to the worst possible conclusions? It wasn’t like Freddie did any of it just for giggles; he’d had good reason!

    They were vampires, he explained patiently. I tried to melt them with water and I tried to burn them with light from the window, but those ideas weren’t working, so I tied them up and I was trying to rot their fangs with the candy. It all made perfect sense.
