Lance smiled at Lydia as she made her way into the room feeling around with her eyes closed. No peeking. Lance instructed his girlfriend. Put your hands over your eyes.

I’m not peeking. Where are you? She covered her eyes with one hand as she felt around with the other. It’s been less than a year since the two moved into their Boston apartment together so Lydia was not sure of her surroundings.

Alright, that’s far enough. You won’t be able to use your gift if you fall and hurt yourself.

Lydia dropped her hand to her side. Hey, don’t make fun of me. Can I look now?

    Lance laughed. Not yet.

A moment passed. Now? Lydia asked more impatient than the last time.

No. A more tense filled moment passed with Lydia pausing.

I’m going to open my eyes. Lydia warned.

    No yet. Wait. Okay now.

Lydia opened her eyes to look at Lance, and she saw only Lance. Well? she asked irritated.

Well, I’m your gift, babe. Lydia frowned and folded her arms.

If this is your idea of a joke then it’s not very funny. Lydia said as she turned around. Sitting on her table was a brand new flute. Oh my God! Lydia was very excited to have a new flute to perform with.

I thought you’d like it. But that’s not your surprise. Lance tugged at a piece of paper in his back pocket. Lydia couldn’t imagine what her next surprise would be, but she could feel herself getting excited. She loved surprises.

Lance pulled the paper out slowly and then started to unravel it slowly. Lydia became impatient and leapt at him for it. What is it? What is it? She kept asking as he kept it away from her.

Let me read it to you. The two laughed. The phone rang and Lydia answered it.

    No don’t! Lance shouted.

Hello? Lydia’s band mate and fellow flautist Grace was screaming on the other end of the line. Grace, what…what’s wrong? Lance tried to pull the phone away from Lydia because Grace was going to ruin his surprise. Stop, Lance. We’re what? Grace, what? Shut up. No! Lydia’s hazel eyes were as big as saucers and she flipped her brown hair as she spoke on the phone. No way. Shut up! No, shut up Grace, shut up! With who? Lydia screamed a scream
