Freddie Figg & the Lunch Lady Landings - DC Swain

    One

I’m telling you, it wasn’t my fault! Freddie Figg insisted, his hands on his hips as he stared up at Principal Wills.

Around them, the cafeteria was empty, with unattended trays and half-eaten lunches all over the tables and the floor. Messy, dripping blobs of sloppy Joe filling were splattered across the walls, the floor, the tables, the ceiling, and even Freddie himself, who was also covered in flour. Just barely visible from the other side of the cafeteria, the door to the kitchen was open, and beyond it, the kitchen was in disarray, with utensils and pots and trays over turned in every direction. The walk-in refrigerator hung open, a trio of lunch ladies standing outside it and grumbling to each other.

As Mr. Wills looked around the room in displeased amazement, the lunch ladies glowered in Freddie’s direction, and he stuck his tongue out them. He snapped back to attention, though, when Mr. Wills cleared his throat.

All three lunch ladies were locked in the fridge, and you were the only other person in the room, Mr. Wills pointed out, like he was trying to explain something to a very small child. Freddie hated it when grown-ups used that tone. Are you honestly going to try to convince me that you didn’t do it?

Freddie rolled his eyes and folded his arms over his chest. "I didn’t say I didn’t do it, just that it wasn’t my fault." Honestly, some grown-ups just didn’t know how to pay attention at all. It was maddening.

Mr. Wills dragged a hand down his face
