    You have to believe me! Freddie Figg pleaded, as if there wasn’t a rather battered, abused plant at his feet. The leaves were crinkled and the stem was cracked, and the flower petals all had dark, ugly creases on them. It wasn’t my fault!

    His mom looked around slowly at the absence of most of the plants she had purchased, the mess of plant material all over Freddie’s clothes, and the very unfortunate plant at his feet.

    "So I didn’t come out here to see you trying to pull one of my new plants out of the ground?" she asked, and it was very clear that she had already decided not to believe whatever Freddie was going to say. That was how it usually went. Freddie loved his mom, he really did, but sometimes he could swear she was blind.

    The plants started it, Freddie shot back sourly. They all tried to kill me, he added, pointing down at the plant. I’m lucky to still be alive.

    His mom sighed and rubbed her temples, already trying to chase off a headache. You’re going to need to explain that one to me, dear, she stated wearily. I’m not sure how a few plants managed to be life-threatening.

    Alright, so. Freddie cleared his throat. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, and then…
