So, what can I tell you about Cassandra Carmichael?

Cassandra prefers – almost insists upon – being called Cassie. ‘Just Cassie,’ she will say. She has pale aqua-blue eyes and lavender hair, which skims her neck in soft curls. I don’t remember when she first went ‘pastel’ – before the lavender, she was ‘baby pink’. I think it all began in her early 50s.

Cassie has a penchant for chunky costume jewellery, clothes that flow, her favourite being wide floral trousers, long boho skirts coupled with gypsy tops, all in fabulous bold colours. So I don’t know what brought on the ‘pastel thing’.

‘I MUST ADMIT SHE SCARED ME TO DEATH’

She works extremely hard and has done for as long as I’ve been around. Cassie has talent. She’s an artist, freelance photographer and sculptor.

How can one woman be all of those things? Cassandra Carmichael can.

She has a quaint shop that doubles as a working studio and does very well showcasing her paintings, of which she sells a lot. The same goes for her sculptures. She photographs mostly weddings and portraits, which are her favourite. And she drives a bright red van tainted with a bit of rust here and there. She has named the van Binky. Don’t ask where that came from, but she loves that van. It serves her well.

On top of all this, she has been a single mother for quite a few years now, with no love interest in sight. The father of her child, incidentally, ran for the hills on learning she was pregnant, never to be seen again.

But anyone who knows Cassie will know that she doesn’t suffer fools gladly – a cliche I can fit Cassandra Carmichael with, but it’s true. While she is gentle, generous and caring, she will cut off anyone’s
