Chapter 1
There wasn’t much time . The pirates bravely fought off the evil tirade of the captain’s fleet and made way to the ship’s edge before the wave from the storm overtook the ship. The young pirate wondered how his love, in her far-off world, was faring, for he knew in his heart he might not make it, and she was carrying his child. They raced to the edge of the deck, sliding under just before they were overcome with the tumultuous storm. Sweat was dripping from their faces despite the sheets of water pouring from all angles as all of their hard work and training allowed them to narrowly miss the gunshots firing near their heads. One grazed the young pirate’s shoulder. He cursed himself for being so clumsy.
Now I’ve got you!
The team turned around in shock, just in time to see the evil captain with his sword out above them, shouting over the storm. You can’t escape me! You will never see the light of day! Now come downstairs; it’s time for dinner.
Sylvia frowned. Why would the evil captain say that? This was her favorite fanfiction, and someone was majorly messing up the characters. She hated when writers did that. It ruined the book and succeeded only in pulling her out of the exciting, imaginary world she so longed to be a part of.
I said, Sylvia dear, it’s time for dinner!
Sylvia heard her grandmother call out for her. She rolled her eyes. It wasn’t the fanfiction pulling her back to dull reality. It was her grandma. Time for reality.
Sylvia groaned and lumbered towards the dining room.
Sylvia was a pretty young lady, though she would never believe it if anyone told her that. She was of average height and weight, with a heap of brown hair and hazel eyes. Sylvia thought she looked like the most average girl in the world. She longed to have sleek, straight hair like the pretty girls at her school, but her wavy brown hair was lovely to everyone else. She loved anime, fanfiction, music, movies, cosplay, and reading. At 15 years old, Sylvia felt like she might never be done with school. But she didn’t mind school that much; she just preferred to be doing something else was all. Like reading fanfiction. Or skydiving. Or pretending to be a pilot adventuring aboard a spaceship hurling through space, seeking new adventures.
Sylvia’s grandfather was named Fredrick, and her grandmother, Susan Willifred. They lived in a cozy little dwelling at 1428 Blue River Cir. near Hovel Rd. and Pheasant Ln. in London, England.
Freddy and Susan Willifred were a bit different from their granddaughter. They did not like fancy cars or trips to Spain. They did not eat ethnic foods or do crazy things like go base jumping or fly fishing.
No no, for Freddy and Susan, regular fishing was much more preferred indeed. And trips out of the house consisted of Susan going to the market, which she did every Wednesday at 10:00 am sharp. Freddy went to the same office at which he had worked for 22 years as an accountant at Wilson & Wilson Bank Corp. He arrived at 9:00 AM sharp Monday through Thursday.
Breakfast was every morning at 7:30 AM, and it was always coffee and hot cereal with toast. Sylvia had been sick of it since she was 5 years old, but it never seemed to change her grandparents’ minds. Dinner was always at 7:30 PM and consisted of a variety as extensive as glazed pot roast with green beans and a baked potato or glazed ham with green beans and a baked potato.
Sometimes the elderly couple partook of such things as wine but only on their anniversary. Their anniversary was a very exciting and spontaneous day in the Willifred household. Once, Sylvia saw them purchase a lovely cupcake, which she stole a spoonful of icing from when no one was looking. Nothing had tasted more delicious than the spoonful of creamy, sweet vanilla buttercream frosting.
Sometimes, also on Freddy and Susan’s anniversary, the spontaneous couple went out of the house to their favorite pub, Dullsey’s, for an exciting dinner of their usual fish and chips. On those nights, Sylvia got to stay by herself. Sylvia looked forward to this day. She would always order a pizza, blast her favorite K-Pop music, and read her favorite anime. It was always a great day. She now looked forward to it every year, but the last time they had gone to Dullsey’s was when Sylvia was 14, so she had sadly missed out the last year when her grandparents had spontaneously chosen to celebrate at home instead.
Yes, life in the Willifred household was a wonderfully uneventful one indeed, and at the ripe age of 72, both Susan and Frederick were absolutely, positively content to spend the remainder of their years living life just as they had done in their youth: doing absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Sylvia loved her grandparents dearly, but she couldn’t stand the ordinary.
Sylvia slumped groggily to the dinner table. It was glazed pot roast with green beans and a baked potato. Big surprise, Sylvia thought to herself. But she knew she should be grateful. There were surely people who were in need of food, and she should be thankful to have it. She looked up at the sweet face of her grandmother and smiled.
Before bed, Freddy and
