Unfortunately, it is only the first step in what can be a long journey towards cutting out almost all of the carbs out of your life for good.

    While sticking to strict carb limit can be difficult at first, the following chapters will discuss everything you need to know in order to adapt to a keto lifestyle as quickly and painlessly as possible.     Chapter 1: All About the Keto Diet

    W

    hile finding a diet that limits carbohydrates is easy, finding one that actually works as intended can be more difficult than you might expect. The truth of the matter is that all low-carb diets are based around the idea that the human body will naturally burn fat for fuel when the need arises. As such, in order for a low-carb diet to work as advertised it needs to decrease the amount of the carbs in your system in order to force the body into a fat burning state and, ideally, keep it there for as long as possible.

    The body’s ability to use fat as a fuel source is known as ketosis and it is this ability that the ketogenic diet is based around. Essentially, the way it works is that carbohydrates require less energy to burn than fat which means that as long as there are carbs available your body will burn them for fuel first. If you take away the carbs, however, then the liver is forced to start using stored fat to create what are known as ketones, which are a fuel source the body can then use in much the same way it would any available glucose, which is what is created when carbs are broken down into a useable state.

    Thus, when your body is free of excess glucose it can enter a ketogenic state and the lack of available fuel will be taken oven largely by excess fat, and somewhat by protein. When your body reaches this state you will find that your body naturally burns more fat than it did previously, even if you don’t change anything else about your diet.

    Other diets: In order to more accurately understand exactly why the keto diet is as effective as it is the first thing you need to understand is how the average diet works. Specifically, in most diets, the goal is to reduce the number of calories consumed each day to a point where weight loss can occur. Now, as the content of the calories that are consumed is often not focused on to any real degree, the average diet mimics the Standard American Diet which means it involves lots and lots of carbs, a reasonable amount of protein and practically no healthy fats. As such, the body has no choice but to burn carbohydrates for fuel and because they are so easy to break down the excess are then stored as fat in case of emergencies. As there are always more carbohydrates than are strictly needed, however, that extra fat is never called into play and does nothing but contribute to weight gain.

    What’s more, when glucose is broken down it creates a molecule known as ATP which is what is actually used to keep cells functioning properly and a byproduct of ATP creation is insulin. While insulin is useful when it comes to helping ATP move through the body effectively, it is also impossible for the body to lose weight normally while it is active which means that for about eight hours after every meal your ability to lose weight is curtailed.

    This issue is then compounded in a traditional diet as without the proper amount of calories coming in each day the body is more likely to hang onto every available calorie it does see which means you will lose fat even slower still. Instead of trying to lose weight with the deck completely stacked against you, adopting the keto diet makes it possible to work with the body’s natural weight loss mechanisms to help you look and feel better than you even realized was possible.

    Keto, Atkins or Paleo: While both the Atkins and the paleo diet both focus on eating fewer carbohydrates than the Standard American Diet, it is the dedication to reaching and maintaining ketosis that really sets the keto diet apart from the pack. The Atkins diet allows followers to reach ketosis, but these days it then focuses on adding additional carbohydrates back to the diet once the serious weight loss is completed.

    Likewise, while the paleo diet focuses on eating fewer grains, and thus fewer carbs, but doesn’t focus enough on macro management to ensure that followers are able to reach a state of ketosis reliably or remain in it if they do. While it does focus on fats as a primary fuel source, it doesn’t shy away from the carbohydrates found in things like sweet potatoes, fibrous vegetables and fruits in moderation. While you can certainly eat paleo and follow a ketogenic diet at the same time, this is not a requirement.

    Keto diet differences: The biggest difference between the keto diet and more traditional diets is obvious in that the keto diet tracks the number of carbohydrates you consume each day in order to trick your body into a ketogenic state. You see, the liver’s ability to generate ketones came about as a last ditch effort in order to help the body keep going even if it was starving. As such, drastically cutting down on the number of carbs you consume each day can trick the body into starting ketosis without any of the negative side effects that come along with slow starvation.

    Once ketosis kicks off the body is then able to use all the fat stores that it has been building up for years and years to help keep your body as full of energy as ever, if not even more so. Perhaps the best part, the first fat that is often consumed by the body comes directly from the common problem areas around the midsection. The stored fat is then broken down into a combination of glycerol and fatty acid. Fatty acid is necessary for helping the body regulate ketone production to ensure the body has all the power it needs.
