About this ebook

There Was a Great Woman is a book written about different women in the Bible, some of whom were obscure and others often read about and well-known. They all teach us practical lessons relevant to the present day. Every woman is unique in Gods eyes, and God has a plan and purpose for each of our lives. We are to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto us. This book was written to encourage women and help them realize that they are called by God to be used by God where they are. They can overcome and be more than conquerors through Christ who strengthens them. They can be the great women of God they are called to be.

Author

Rebecca Mathis

Rebecca has been living for and serving God for twenty-four years. For twenty-two of those years she has taught God’s Word. She has been a licensed and ordained minister since 1993. She has been married to Johnny Mathis for thirty-four years, and they have three children and five grandchildren. God gave her a dream, and in the dream she was in the chamber that the Shumanite woman made. God directed her to continue in women’s ministry and to write this book. Women today have become so consumed with trying to make it from day to day that they have taken their eyes off of Jesus. She wants to encourage women to seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto them.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated in memory of my mother, Bessie L. Simmons Peters. Silver and Gold had she none, but such as she had, she gave me. She raised me in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. She looked well to the ways of her household.

To my Daughter, Lena L. Mathis Martin, may you always walk in the wisdom and knowledge that you can do all things through Christ which strengthens thee… And to my granddaughter, Lila Raine Martin, I am greatly desiring to see you walk in the unfeigned faith that was first in thy grandmother’s, Candice Lorraine Martin and myself, and I am persuaded that will be in thee also.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

God has placed so many Godly women in my life along this pilgrim way. I’m thankful for the example of a Godly Woman that my Mother was, as well as my Spiritual Mother, Pastor Georgia Bridges. If I had not seen her walk in the obedience and demonstration of the Holy Ghost in her life, I may not have stepped out in faith and obedience in so many areas of my life. She has many spiritual children that have grown up and became True Pillars in the Church, great is her reward.

    REVIEW

There Was A Great Woman by Rebecca Mathis chronicles exegetically the Bible passage of Elisha and the Woman from Shunem in 2 Kings 4 as the central focus for this revelatory reading. This read contains a strong use of the Bible, sound doctrine and keen insight into the Word of God in a relevant and practical manner applicable to men and women in our present culture where influence and prominence is highly sought after. This is a must read for anyone desiring to know and understand fully the divine commission of woman as she uses what she has, to obtain all that is needed to benefit others. This was written in the heart of servant hood with meekness and the holy fear of the Lord. Simply put, this book is truly an impartation of the Lord to not only be received, but to meditate upon it as a devotional, for it to take root in you to be applied and used in your life which will allow you also, to use what you have to obtain all that is needed for the benefit of others through your understanding. This is a must read and I endorse this gift wholeheartedly! Truly life-changing!

    PREFACE

For many years, I have taught and preached The Gospel, a few of these chapters are messages I have preached and lived. For many years I was active in the local church with the women’s ministry, and also on the District level, initially as the Missionettes’ Director and then the Women’s Ministry Director. I stepped down from the Women’s Ministry Director position when my mother’s health was failing, and I needed to be available more to her. After her demise, my husbands’ business of twenty plus years was no longer, so I worked more hours on my job. I would pray and question God, How Long? How long before I would be able to be more active in the local church as well as evangelize. I stayed in God’s Word, stayed in The House of God, and waited on the Lord.

After many years the Lord gave me a dream, in which I was in the chamber that the Shunemite woman built. In this dream he let me know that I was to continue to minister to women, and write this book, and the initial chapter was to be, Where Was a Great Woman. Which is where I had been, praying and seeking God’s face for direction in my life. He kept me in this chamber, meditating on His Word, Reading, Praying, Birthing this book. He would direct me in His Word for each chapter, and give new revelation. My prayer is that you glean as much from the reading as I did from the study and writing of this work.

    CHAPTER I

    WHERE WAS A GREAT WOMAN

    2 Kings 4: 8-10

    8. And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, Where Was A Great Woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

    9. And she said unto her husband, Behold, now, I perceive, that, this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.

    10. Let us make a little chamber, I pray
