This short guide shouldn't be understood as a substitute for professional care by a gastroenterologist or another specialist.

Its aim is to fill a gap between professional literature and individual care by physicians.

It is a self- help guide aiming at better care for this disease.

    Key words

Gastro- esophageal reflux, lower esophageal sphincter insufficiency (stomach inlet insufficiency), reflux esophagitis, hiatal herniation, gastro- esophageal reflux disease, GERD.

    Prevalence

Gastro- esophageal reflux is a frequent complaint. About a third of the population of industrialized countries suffers from GERD on and off.

    Anatomy

The anatomical substrate for GERD consists in a faulty ligament restraint of movements of distal esophagus. (I e ligaments linking distal esophagus to diaphragm.)

Its full- blown image is hiatal herniation, which is the term frequently used for convenience’s sake in this text.

Hiatal herniation causes incompetency of lower esophageal sphincter (gastric inlet), and thus allows stomach content to reflux in lower esophagus.
