Book Two: Almost a Happy Ending
Chapter 1
Agnes watched as a makeup artist painted lip liner around Karen’s lips, accentuating what God had already seen fit to give her. She tilted her head slightly, trying to make the color look good against Karen’s pale skin, but no matter how she held her head, it only made her look washed out and sickly.
She shook her head.
Maybe something a little less dramatic,
Karen said.
The makeup artist offered her a tissue with a lotion remover on it before excusing herself to find another set of colors. Karen watched her go before she leaned forward to whisper to Agnes.
Did she not notice that I have red hair?
Agnes shrugged. Maybe she’s color blind.
Just my luck. I get the only makeup artist in town who is.
Karen rubbed the tissue against her lips, making a face as some of the remover got into her mouth. This really isn’t my thing. If Benton wasn’t paying a small fortune for the pictures—
You would do it anyway because you only get married once.
True.
Karen sat back and studied Agnes where she stood leaning against the long, low counter in front of the beautician chairs. Where did you sneak off to this afternoon?
Chance texted me. She wanted to talk.
Karen continued to study Agnes, waiting to hear the rest, even as a little sadness came into her expression.
Agnes moved to the chair beside Karen’s and sat with a heavy sigh. She’s struggling. She feels like no one really understands what she’s going through and that Matt wants her to just get over it, to move on with her life as though it wasn’t a life changing thing.
I can’t imagine he would really tell her that.
I don’t know.
Agnes pressed a couple of fingers under the careful braid the cosmetologist has twisted her hair into in practice for the wedding. Whatever he’s told her, he’s not talking to me about it. He flipped a lid when he found out she was at the mall with me instead of at a study group.
He probably wasn’t mad at you. You were just a convenient outlet.
Maybe.
The beautician came back with a heavy tray filled with lipsticks, eye shadows, and other makeup paraphernalia. Karen sat back as the woman began again with a new lip pencil, this one an orangey red that didn’t look much better than the last. Agnes began to dread her turn under the makeup experiment despite her original excitement at the idea of having someone else do all this for her the day of the wedding: another of Benton’s gifts for his bride-to-be.
Agnes pulled her phone out of her pocket and checked her messages for something from Matt. There wasn’t anything, just as she had known there wouldn’t be. She bit the inside of her cheek only to have Karen reach over and slap her knee.
This is supposed to be a happy night. Relax.
You’re right.
Agnes turned off her phone and dropped it into the depths of her oversized bag. Tonight is about us.
That’s right.
Karen was not a traditional bride. She didn’t want a bachelorette party with a group of strippers and overindulgence. Instead, she wanted to have her test hair and makeup appointment, and then she and Agnes were going to a local spa for massages and expensive skin treatments. They’d both been looking forward to it since they first planned it out. But Agnes couldn’t stop thinking about the look on Matt’s face when he told her to stay away from Chance.
Maybe he was right. Maybe she should just stay away from both of them. They would never agree on what Chance needed and Agnes would never be able to keep her mouth shut.
Maybe it just wasn’t right. Maybe Matt needed someone who was more in his league, a woman who understood a life of luxury, of traveling on jet planes and going to fancy parties and eating in expensive restaurants. Agnes would never be that person.
Okay,
she said as much to herself as anyone else.
She and Karen were laughing as they walked arm and arm into the spa, their faces carefully painted in colors that were still not quite right. The makeup artist had wanted to create a smoking eye on Agnes despite the fact that the wedding was set for early afternoon and her dress was a soft, silvery blue. Karen argued with her only to have the woman finally throw in the towel and ask them to come back the following afternoon when another makeup artist would be available.
I have never had someone quit on me quite like that before. It’s more like something my father would have done.
That thought seemed to sober Karen. Maybe I’m more like my father than I ever thought I was.
That’s like saying I’m just like my mother.
Karen glanced at her. Well, I’ve been meaning to tell you —
Agnes smacked her arm, causing Karen to take a quick sidestep into sagebrush growing near the doors.
Don’t do that! The last thing I need is for you to break your ankle and cause Benton to blame me for ruining your wedding.
I have very strong bones.
Karen took her arm and began walking toward the front entrance of the spa again. But maybe we should try not to get kicked out of here.
That was easier said than done, though, thanks in large part to the fact that they had forgotten to schedule time for dinner and the spa served them champagne almost from the moment they walked through the doors. Every time Karen would look at Agnes, she appeared to be on the verge of laughter.
Are you sure we want to do this?
Agnes stood in front of a wooden cubby in a locker room that was more like someone’s very big, very nicely decorated closet. It’s kind of weird, thinking about some stranger rubbing his hands all over me.
It’s fun.
Karen hung her blouse on a hook in her own cubby and pulled a clean, white bathrobe from the sealed bag they were given when they first came in to the spa. It’s like going to the chiropractor with less joint popping.
Agnes shook her head even as Karen began to laugh again. The things rich people find exciting.
Trust me. You’ll like it.
We’ll see.
Agnes slowly undressed, clipping her pump to the bottom edge of the bathrobe until she was naked and could find a better place to put it. She had both her pump’s infusion set and her transmitter for the CGM on her outer thigh, creating an interesting problem when it came to securing the pump while still keeping her body covered. Karen took a look at the pinched expression on her face and silently handed her a fresh glass of champagne.
Relax.
But it did turn out to be a lot more relaxing than Agnes could have imagined. They were taken into a room with two massage
