About this ebook

Karly Murry has practically grown up in her family’s bakery, originally opened by her grandmother, so it’s a shock to realize that her father is thinking about selling it in order to pay for the bills. It would be easy to put off money worries, but they’re made more desperate by the fact that her grandmother and dad are both having health problems, and the prospect of those medical expenses is hard to ignore. When Jacob Black walks in to talk to her father about buying the bakery and flipping it to another buyer for a profit, it may be the answer to those money worries, but it’s also a nightmare. She desperately wants to hate Jacob for intruding, but with the knowledge that it isn't his fault, it gets easier and easier to begin feeling chemistry with this man who’s capable of wrecking all of her dreams. Before she knows it, she doesn't know whether to focus on Jacob or the bakery, or whether she should be heartbroken or happy, but one way or another, everything revolves around her bakery and this mysterious buyer.

    Chapter 1

Flour flew all over Karly Murry’s black lace apron. Heaving another breath, she pushed the rolling pin out again and brought it back in.

Twenty-three pie crusts done and only a few more left to go. This should last them the next few days, at least. A chill touched her spine as the back door opened and shut.

Hey Daddy. Karly didn’t need to look to know it was him. She’d given Ivan the day off.

What are you doing here so late?

I just wanted to get started on the pie crust for tomorrow. And really, she didn’t have anywhere else to be but the hospital. And she was avoiding that as much as she could. What are you doing here?

    I’m… meeting someone.

Karly turned to face her father. He was a short man, about her height, with a full head of grey hair that was slicked out of his way; the matching grey stubble along his chin made him look grumpier than he was. He wore his black canvas coat and jeans.

You’re meeting someone? Karly repeated, sure she had heard him wrong.

Her father brushed past her and headed for the door. He’s already here. Why don’t you pull out some leftovers from today and put on a pot of tea, please?

Sure enough, there was someone peering in at them, with a smile on his face and a briefcase in his hand. Karly watched as her father unlocked the front door and opened it, inviting the man in as they shook hands and exchanged names.

The man turned to her. He had short black hair that had a few spikes standing on end, all facing different directions. He wore dark jeans and a white button up shirt, with a black tie and leather jacket. He smiled as he stepped closer to her.

This must be your daughter. Karly, right? He held his hand out to her.

Yes, Karly shook his hand. And what do you want? Her eyes flicked from the man to her father. What is he doing here? She silently asked her father.

Her father cleared his throat. Karly, why don’t you put some tea on?

Nodding, Karly filled the kettle and put it on before going back to the dough on the counter. She listened carefully to everything her father and this man said.

It’s nice to finally meet you, Mr. Black, should we jump right into things?

Oh please, just call me Jacob. But yes, let’s jump right in.

Right, well. Papers rifled as Karly’s dough stretched wider and wider. Two more rolls and it would be ready. I’ve reviewed the papers you sent me. Your numbers aren’t the best but I like your approach to things. The fact that you’re a father/ daughter bakery is what intrigued me the most. I would really like to proceed with this deal.

Deal? What deal? Karly picked the crust up and carefully plopped
