    Chapter 1

Sir Edward Chanel sat his horse and watched Beth Merlin throw out the trash then return to the warm sanctity of her house. He, on the other hand, sat in the frigid cold hoping to catch a glance of her as she went about her day. But since the night of his confrontation with her, he could not get her out of his thoughts. This from a man who could take or leave women--usually leave them after his lust was quenched. But Edward knew that Beth was different. He had only seen her briefly, but what he saw made his blood burn. She was a lioness protecting her cub. She would fight to the death before she would allow one strand of hair to be plucked from her young’s head. She was strong, fierce and unafraid--all qualities that he admired, especially in a woman. He would have to find a way to be invited into her home. Admiring her from afar would be the death of him, and he had just found something worth living for. Beth Merlin didn’t know it, but she was in for the adventure of her life. Edward eased his huge black bay horse out of the woods and then urged him into a full gallop. He bought a large, beautiful home just four miles down the road and planned to fill it up with lots of children in the not-too-distant future. Peter and Emily had moved into the caretaker house on the premises. Peter needed to be near his workshop and also wanted to be nearby to keep an eye on Beth. So Emily had been busy redecorating. Beth squinted against the setting sun and saw Edward flying across the snow-covered terrain on his monster of a horse. His black cape billowed behind him as the horse pounded the cold earth. She had been aware of him watching her movements for the past two weeks. Why did he come every day
