    Chapter 1

She couldn’t sleep. She lay beside him and watched him sleep, watched his chest move, watched his muscles twitch and jerk as they fell into complete relaxation. Watched the expression on his face move and change as he began to dream. She wondered what it was he dreamed about. A selfish part of her hoped he was dreaming about her.

She became restless and needed to get up and move. She slipped on the t-shirt he had been wearing — a well-worn, vintage tee with the logo of a long defunct snack company on it — and made her way silently downstairs. The house was heavy in its silence, nothing but the occasional tinkle of the chandelier to break up the monotony of the night.

Agnes made her way to the kitchen, the only room she was familiar with, so it was the only room she felt comfortable invading in the middle of the night. A pale light shone in the kitchen. She thought it was light coming in through the bay window, but as she turned the corner she realized the refrigerator door was open.

    Chance?

The girl cried out, jumping nearly a foot off the floor in her bare feet. She turned, a jug of milk in her hand that had spilled across the front of her nightshirt.

Agnes. I didn’t hear you come in.

    Sorry.

Agnes grabbed a handful of paper towels and moped up the mess that had made its way to the floor.

No crying over spilled milk, right?

Chance laughed at her own joke.

Agnes tossed the wet towels in the trash and turned to regard Chance.

Before you ask, she said, pointing to a glucose meter and insulin pen on the counter, I bolused for this.

Good. But I wasn’t going to ask.

She tilted her head slightly, as though she didn’t quite believe Agnes, before she turned and grabbed a glass from the cupboard.

    Do you want some?

Agnes shook her head. She walked over to the breakfast nook and sank down into one of the chairs, her eyes moving to the window. It was dark, but there were security lights on all around the yard. She could see that the automatic sprinklers were running, water rushing down the edges of the driveway as the lawn became saturated. It was kind of pretty in an urban sort of way.

    Couldn’t sleep?

Agnes pulled Matt’s shirt over her knees as she pulled them up against her chest and wrapped her arms around them. She laid her head on her knees and watched Chance settle in a chair across from her with a peanut butter sandwich and her glass of milk.

    Yeah.

Me either. I feel like I’m starving all the time, you know?

It’s your body getting used to having normal blood sugars again. It’ll pass.

Chance nodded. She took a big bite of her sandwich and spoke around it.

"That was pretty scary, what happened the other
