    Chapter 1

Amy stood at the back of the room and watched as Emily and Peter cut their wedding cake. Their faces were alit with joy as they each fed the other. It had been four months since they had announced their engagement. There had been a mad scramble to pull off the perfect wedding. But it had happened. It was a gorgeous day for their union. The weather was cold but otherwise clear and sunny. The church had been packed to overflowing. The people of the village had been overjoyed with the news and had come to together to make Emily and Peter’s wedding a day never to be forgotten. Emily’s uncle and aunt, Robert and Ethel Carlton, as well as Arthur and Sally Hawthorne had come for the wedding. The two couples had quickly become immersed in the preparation for the upcoming nuptials. Sally and Ethel were happily consumed with perfecting the smallest of details, each insisting that their contribution was the most important. The florist had provided beautiful and exotic flowers that were out of season. How she had gotten them, no one knew. The children choir had sung like angels. Emily’s mother had done an astonishing job of decorating the church. And Amy has sewn an exquisite dress for Emily’s special day. Emily seemed to float down the aisle in her silver and blue wedding gown. A floral crown of blue Perennials sat atop her beautifully styled blonde coiffeur, and she wore a string of pink pearls her mother had given her. She looked utterly magnificent. Emily’s father joining them in matrimony was the climax of the day. Now everyone was enjoying themselves in Amy’s lovely Tudor home. Beth had outdone herself with a spectacular wedding fare, and everyone was in high spirits as they toasted the happy couple. Amy was elated for her brother and Emily. She knew that theirs would be a marriage of love and happiness for all of their lives. She could only hope that God would favor her with such a marriage. At twenty-two, most of her friends were already married; although, some were not happily so. But Amy still wanted to know marital bliss. It had been her wondrous dream all of her life. She smiled as she thought of the man who would be her husband, a trustworthy, sincere man with true character. Amy wanted a good man who cared about others and would do all he could to help those in need. He didn’t have to be rich and powerful. He just needed to be caring and honest. Of course, if he were handsome with a debonair flair
