I don’t think we can keep going for much longer,’ Emma said, sighing at her best friend and business partner knowingly.
Lyn looked up from where she was labelling a blue-and-yellow box as Emma set another batch of cakes to cool on a rack.
‘Before long we’ll be paying people to eat our cakes and I don’t think it’s supposed to work like that,’ she agreed.
There seemed to be a limit to how many cupcakes people were willing to buy; everyone was cutting down on luxuries. The friends were struggling to cover costs.
‘Things will pick up,’ Lyn said, trying to sound upbeat. ‘Right, I’m off to make these deliveries.’
Lyn carried the boxes out to the van and felt a pang as she placed them inside. It would be such a shame to lose what they’d built up over the past couple of years.
