Do you change your mind, or do you stick with it?
Mr. Perfect, Or Mr. Right?

What if? A question that betrayed the uncertainty of a decision already made. The question that pops up in a person’s head in spite of the situation going great. A question that festers in the back of one’s mind, resulting in endless second guesses that eventually consumes the one who asks.

Laila has already turned down Eric's offer. She rejects his advances flat out. Yet, he hasn't given up. But what will he do when another man comes along? Witty, intelligent, driven, and ambitious, Vince seems to be the perfect man. Vince and Laila become an item soon enough. It shocked Eric. Even Ashley is shocked.

Then Eric disappears—not a word is spoken, not a text message sent, not even a Facebook status to give anyone a clue where he is. This is nothing new but is the longest. Has she finally driven him away?

Although adamant that Eric will return like he always did, she begins to doubt it herself. In his absence, she begins to miss him terribly. And just as she is about to accept that he probably has given up on her, Eric pops up.

Will he still continue to pursue her, or will he be content with being friend zoned?

Yet the question remains. What if?

EXCERPT
“It’s Eric, isn’t it?”

Once more, Laila didn’t respond. The sudden drooping of her expression and the sadness that heavily clouded her already distant eyes were more than enough. Ashley let out a long, audible expletive.

“I guess this was bound to happen,” Ashley started once more.

Laila kept silent, but the increase in her breathing boded for something that was about to come soon. Ashley knew it was the only way for Laila to talk about it, so she pushed some more.

“Listen, I’m not gonna say I’m not happy for him because I am. I will however not say that I don’t feel for you. I can’t possibly weigh what’s going on inside you right now,” continued Ashley.

She let her words hang. She needed them to sink in. Already, she saw the tears in Laila’s eyes almost spilling over. There were coming.

“We both know he deserves to be happy. He is a great man, and he deserves what he has now,” Ashley added carefully. “We both should be happy for him. I miss him, too.”

Ashley deliberately added the last statement as bait. She smiled to herself when she saw Laila gripping her knees. She observed her shoulders rise longer than it falls. She saw the corners of her mouth twitch.

When a series of breaths came in quick succession, Ashley knew she had succeeded.

“I don’t miss him!” Laila exploded, her tears simultaneously pouring. “I don't miss him! I love him!”

    Chapter One

ERIC! SHE EXCLAIMED. Where the hell have you been?

What do you mean? I've been here all the time, he replied, sitting next to her.

I know, but where? It's been two weeks!

You know, here and there, checking my options. Why? You missed me?

Laila didn't miss that bit about checking his options but did not engage it. Well, Ashley does. She's been asking about you since that night you walked out on us.

Eric also noticed that Laila did not take her bait. Good, he thought. He smiled. So you didn't miss me?

    Not much, no.

Oh, so you did miss me!

Just a little, but I knew you were just around.

    How little?

She made a gesture with her index finger and thumb.

Enough to make you stalk me around the campus asking for my whereabouts. I wonder what you would've done if you missed me a little more.

Laila blushed. Alright, I admit I was a little worried.

There you go again. A little.

    It's true!

Alright, fair enough, admitted Eric, So, what have you and lover boy been up to?

Nothing much. Just movies and dinner and walks in the park and working out, lots of it.

What, you're not sexy enough for him?

Stop it! If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're jealous.

Me, jealous? You know, if I wanted to, you would have been mine a long time ago.

Oh, is that so? What stopped you?

The possibility of a life in jail, said Eric, grinning his boyish grin once more.

Laila punched him on the chest. You'd do that to me?

What? Tie you up, throw you into a cellar and keep you there until you develop Stockholm syndrome and love me back? Hell, yeah!

Are things ever serious with you?

"I am being serious. When all else fails, I'll do that on the eve of your wedding day. Make no mistake, I'm still into you," he said, putting on a deep voice that made it all sound comical.

I have a class in ten. I better get going, Laila said as she rolled her eyes.

See you in a month then?

Don't be silly. You better call up Ashley. She's been worried. Better yet, find her.

I plan to. Maybe I'll take her out on a date.

I'm sure you two will make a cute couple, replied Laila without missing a beat.
