About this ebook
SHE IS THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY... OR SO SHE THOUGHT
A GROTESQUE PANORAMA DRENCHED IN BLOOD
The serial killer has again pounced, and again has hit on the wrong woman. Kit has now whisked Sarah away to his own formidable penthouse, with his select cops as guards, and the security top notch.
A bit more about the killer is revealed, and he is very near, watching and planning. As Sarah and Kit reveled in the security of the penthouse, they also reveled in the consummation of their desire for each other, over and over, the same way that they let the feelings take over.
And as they glory in each other’s arms, the killer is loose, penetrating their defenses in a way they never thought he could.
And he is just a breath away from painting the gruesome image of Sarah’s murder that has already played in his mind over and over and over....

EXCERPT
I took a deep breath myself. “So what are you saying?”
“I suppose I was feeling a little bit insecure, because most women... when they find out that I have money... only date me because of it.” He was looking at me, too, and the slight frowning of my eyebrows seemed to worry him. “Oh God, I’m botching this. Not that I believe you’re like that... what I’m saying is that... I’m not sure how to make you happy. I hadn’t had enough practice at a lasting relationship and I really want this to work.”
“You do?”
He nodded. “I do.”
“Oh... for a moment there I thought you’re breaking up with me.”
He groaned. “I just told you, didn’t I? I suck at this.”
I was laughing. “No, you’re perfect. But what if I am indeed a gold digger? You don’t really know me that well. We’ve only known each other for a few days...”
He was smiling at me so tenderly that it took my breath away. “Deep down, I know that you are not like that, and I think that I'm more afraid that you are going to leave me. If I could make it so that you never do, I would gladly give up my entire fortune to be with you.”
“Oh, Kit... no, you didn’t have to. I only dig books, not gold. Your fortune’s safe.”
“I can buy you boatloads of books.”
I laughed again. “But you see, you’re lying.”
The smile left his face. “What?”
“It’s not true that you suck. What is true is that you’re a natural at this. I’ve never felt so... special. I feel so lucky that I’ve met someone like you, Kit.” I sighed. “I lied, too, you know.”
“About what?” he asked, more confused now since he seemed to be not over yet about what I first had said. I couldn’t believe that someone like him, handsome and sensitive and rich, could be so insecure!
“It’s not true that I only dig books... I also dig you, Kit Sorensen.”

Lily Green is 41, divorced, and lives in Pacific Heights, San Francisco. She has two sons—Michael, 22 and Todd, 18. Lily has a dark past—she was adopted as a child by a well-meaning, homey schoolteacher and her husband, a bartender. Her adopted father abused her as a child, and in her late teens, she decided she had had enough and reported the incident both to her mom, and the local police. Her mother, instead of coming to her aid, decided to evict her. Lily, therefore, had to move into the city and fend for herself, working odd jobs to put herself through college. She married Howard, a fellow student, and father to both her sons. They parted ways when Todd was 3. Michael is in medical school—an intern—with a pre-med degree in Psychiatry. Michael resides in L.A. Todd is a student at San Francisco University, taking up Dance as his major. Both Michael and Todd are single. Her former husband is Howard, head of an architecture firm. Though he and Lily are estranged, he helps put the kids through college. Lily herself was a dance choreographer—and now teaches Development of Dance Techniques and Dance Theory—part time. She is known to date men several years her junior, as she finds most men her age or older to be “too serious” and “boring." She has a healthy appetite for sex, but finds getting into a serious relationship for long periods “a waste of time." She feels she has yet to find a man her equal both intellectually and physically. She does not believe in “love”—she defines relationships as a meeting of minds and a consensual approval of helping the other grow. Lily is into organic food and is a health and exercise buff (though mostly incidental—the exercising helps “clear her mind”). She is into “centering” and yoga. She has yet to give up smoking, though. She loves to shop but within reason. Anything excessive and lavish has to be justified, she feels. Lily is deeply into social work (she is a member of the local LGBT group as a generous donor for free HIV testing drives, among other advocacies.). She is also an advocate for animal adoption. She describes herself as “a city girl with a small-town heart."

I COULDN’T GET over the image of Brenda – all tied up and killed in that horrific way she had.
I didn’t think I ever could.
It was supposed to be me in that tree, naked, defenseless, hurting, scared... and all alone before she died, and it was supposed to be my blood on that painting in that wall.
I couldn’t get over the fact that the only reason it happened to her was because the evil bastard who had murdered her thought she was me. I knew I would carry her death in my conscience my entire life, which could be bloody short if that criminal would find me and would have his way with me.
What made it worse was that I had given Brenda grief the last days of her life. Even if it had been her that Kit had liked and not me, I wouldn’t wish her ill will. Nobody deserved to die like that, in the cold, alone but with a deranged soul who painted the last thing she would ever see with her own blood flowing from her painful wounds on the wall.
Again I thought, She must have been so scared... poor Brenda.
Meanwhile, I was rushed out of the area feeling like I was some sort of high dignitary, like the President of the United States. I didn’t even had the time to cry or be shocked. Kit was all business, conducting the scene like an orchestra and putting the pieces into place for where we were going to go next, while I tried my best to stem my tears until noone could see me. I was frozen. Everything was happening around me and I couldn’t think. I couldn’t move. There was just that anger. I wish I could kill the bastard who did this to Jennifer and Brenda and all those previous poor women. I wish I could kill that soulless person who was doing this to us.
I want an internal investigation into what happened here,
Kit said in a low voice as he talked to Jason. There has to be reason for how he found us so easily. Not many people knew where we were at.
I know,
Jason confirmed, his own grief seeping through his pale, handsome face. Detective, I didn't say anything to anybody. I don’t imagine Brenda did. And Gary... he only knew of the location on the way. I’ve known him for a long time. He wouldn’t even tell his mother.
Brenda was his friend, I thought with a pang in my heart. He treated her like a sister. This is like blood tainting anything that happens to be in the way where it flows.
I'm going to make it my personal mission to keep this next location as quiet and as secure as it could be,
Kit told Jason in a voice that sounded like a promise.
Jason’s jaw tightened. I‘ll be in the middle of the internal investigation myself. If somebody is leaking information to anyone anywhere, even indirectly or digitally or without meaning harm, I will find out about it. I have a few friends in the force that can look into this more discreetly. They have been a wealth of information when I needed it most in the past.
Kit nodded. I’ll take care of the next safe house, and you do what you do as long as you get results. I will conduct the investigation via telephone and computer. Our primary job is to make sure that this doesn't happen again. Can we count on each other?
Yes,
was Jason’s simple answer.
Both men were dead serious. I wondered where the next location would be. Neither I nor Jason knew about it.
Set it up when we get there,
was Kit’s last instruction to Jason before both men went their business. And Kit’s was me, since after that he turned to me.
This shouldn't have happened in the first place. I couldn’t understand how it happened this time. In all of my years on the force, I have never had so many problems in protecting a witness before,
he was muttering under his breath. I couldn’t tell if he was even talking to me. There has to be something that I'm missing. I can’t rest until I find it.
Kit...
I began, but when his piercing eyes focused on me, I couldn’t speak. There was so much power and determination in those watchful eyes, on that handsome face, that he seemed suddenly ruthless.
"From now on, I
