The Impact of Trust

About this ebook
“Luck favors the team that trusts each other.” Mike Krzyzewski
High trust teams have a better chance to reach their potential. On high trust teams, energy and effort levels are consistently high, there is a culture of accountability, athletes trust their training, fully commit to team goals and “WE” is more important the “me”. This booklet focuses on three key reasons why leaders are trusted or mistrusted and how that trust impacts both individual and team performance.
Trust changes everything.

Value of Trust on a Team - High Trust/Low Trust?
Teamwork: "There comes a moment on great crews that transcends anything the individual could have ever accomplished on their own. When most men talk about their perfect moments in a boat, they refer not so much to winning a race as to the feel of the boat, all eight oars in the water together… the synchronization almost perfect. In moments like that, the boat seems to lift right out of the water. Oarsmen call that the moment of swing. Olympics contender John Bigelow loved that moment, but what he liked most about it was that it allowed you to trust the other men in the boat.. A boat did not have swing unless everyone was putting out in exact timing. Because of that, and only because of that, there was the possibility of trust among the team.
That moment of swing
is what happens when all the members of your team are working together as one - when every member is pulling for every other member, and the thoughts of we
have become the most important thing.
There must be a conscious effort to blend all the skills and strengths, setting aside ‘what’s good for me - personal glory and embracing what’s good for the team - collective accomplishment’. This is never easy."
David Halberstam -The Amateurs
When building teams, no quality is more important than trust. Trust builds momentum, improves performance and bonds teammates and coaches. Lack of trust destroys those same things. Trust equals strength and it is real. Trust eliminates fear. Competitive people thrive on trust. Teams need trust to reach their potential. Players respond to trust with improved effort and attitude. When teams get into a tough competitive situation and team trust has been left to chance, there is little hope.
Trust is visible. It can be seen in any ideal teaching/learning environment. Where athletes trust their coaches they also trust their training
. Once trust is established the learning process speeds up dramatically. It can be seen in the way players and coaches interact. There is instant belief and fearless play.
Leadership is about developing a climate of trust that gets results. Therefore coaches need to be proficient at understanding, developing and extending trust; not only to improve performance, but as the most effective way to build successful teams and individuals. When there has been intentional and mutual acceptance of needs, standards, goals, roles and commitment, trust follows.
Trusting another person normally takes time but the process can be greatly accelerated if approached intentionally and if the leader/coach understands exactly what behaviors allow you to gain the trust of the most important people on any team… the players.
The effort and energy put into developing trust with individual athletes and a team is always worth the time because it is absolutely essential for long term success. Teams that have intentionally created a climate of trust are aligned to reach potential, which is all any leader can ask.
To develop a strong level of trust on a
