It is said that Carson McCullers had initially planned to write a story about a girl who happens to be in love with her piano teacher, but she suddenly found something which compelled her to change it into a full length novel.
The story is set in the month of August 1944. The time is towards the end of the Second World War. Eventually, the war had ended the following summer.
The novel basically deals with the subject of war. Frankie is the young protagonist of the novel. Having gone through the war experiences, Frankie experiences personal growth as well.

The Member of the Wedding
by Carson McCullers was first published in 1946. According to the author, it took her five years to write this novel. While writing this novel, she had completed writing another short novel The Ballad of the Sad Café.
The author explains that she had worked very hard on this novel, for she desired it to be a perfect piece of literature. She wanted her novel to be one of those works that the least slip can ruin. She wanted that her novel must be beautifully done.

Frankie Addams is a twelve-year old girl. She is the protagonist of the novel; she lives in the American South. It is 1944. The story revolves around Frankie and her experiences.
The main frustration in Frankie’s life is that she feels she does not belong to any group. She feels that she is disconnected with the world around her.
She happens to be the daughter of a jeweler. Her mother had passed away in child birth. She is not like normal adolescents; on
