    Born in Harlem during the height of the Harlem Renaissance (New York cultural movement of the 1920s), James Baldwin led a crowded but lonely childhood. Abused by his stepfather for being a bastard, the result of a relationship his mother had before their marriage, and intelligent in a way that set him apart from his peers even at an early age, Baldwin grew up in relative poverty, often helping to take care of his eight younger siblings. Maturing into adolescence as a young black man in a world still plagued by violent and explicit racism, and gradually coming to understand that he was bisexual, Baldwin also struggled to find acceptance beyond the family home in the city where he had been born.
