Chapter One: Introduction
Several science fiction novels have been written by several writers from time to time. Only a few of those novels have really found their place in the minds and hearts of the readers.
The fictional world of science fiction primarily attracts young readers, however, there are certain such works of literature which have also pulled the attention of the older readers. Ender’s Game
is one such novel that is equally liked by both young and old.
Ender’s Game
by Orson Scott was first published in the year 1985. It is categorized as a military science fiction novel. The story of the novel describes the two major wars or conflicts with the Buggers
, an insectoid alien species. The buggers invade Earth three times, but the third invasion destroys them.
After these two conflicts, the mankind is imperiled. Ender Wiggin, the protagonist of the novel, is also one of the people who are being trained to take part in the expected third invasion.
Ender Wiggin and others get their training at a very young age. They are taught through gradually increasingly difficult games. Some of the games are set in zero gravity. During such zero gravity training programs, Ender’s tactical genius comes to be noticed.
The book was originally written in the form of a short story called Ender’s Game.
This short story was published in the month of August 1977. The story was published in the August issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact.
When the book was published for the first time, most of the reviews were positive, although there were some critics who did not approve of the author’s perceived justification of the violence done by the characters in the novel.
Several military organizations have included Ender’s Game
in their course of study as suggested reading. Even the United States Marine Corps have included the book in their suggested reading.
Ender’s Game
has been the recipient of several prestigious awards which include Nebula Award for Best Novel in the year 1985 and Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1986.
The book has also been adapted into a film. It was released in the month of October in 2013.
Ender’s Game
is the first science fiction novel which was published entirely online. Eventually, it was published in its paperback form.
The popularity of the book has been on the rise and even today the online readers look for the book at several book sites. The printed version of the book is also in great demand.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
As the novel opens, we are introduced to Ender Wiggin. He happens to be the third child in the family. His family is called a family of child geniuses.
It transpires that Ender has been selected by International Military Forces to protect our human world from being destroyed. During the test, Ender is made to put on a unique monitor though which the head of the military can see what he does or thinks.
Peter, Ender’s brother, and Valentine, his sister, were also told to wear those monitors. However, they were not chosen and they were not told to wear the monitors as long as Ender wore it. Peter is not happy with Ender and he is not going to forgive Ender for it.
It transpires that Peter hates Ender. Even after the test and selection, Peter remains angry with Ender.
Ender’s schoolmates are also not happy with him. They compel him to come with them. He is brutally beaten by a gang of school bullies. Valentine comes forward to protect him from Peter, but she fails. Eventually, Colonel Graff of the International Fleet comes there and rescues Ender and takes him away to the Battle School.
Valentine loves Ender, but she is left behind. The world is threatened by the buggers. Ender is taken away to save the world from the attack
