“Silence” by Japanese writer Shusaku Endo was first published in 1966. It is a historical fiction that revolves around a Jesuit missionary.
The Jesuit missionary is sent to Japan in the seventeenth century. The Christians had to remain hidden during that period. It was the time of persecution and the missionary had to endure the persecution.
After his arrival and time spent there, the Shimabara Rebellion was defeated.
“Silence” is considered as the author’s supreme achievement. It won the Tanizaki Prize in the year 1966. It is also regarded as one of the 20th century’s finest novels.

Silence

The Jesuit missionary is sent to Japan in the seventeenth century. The Christians had to remain hidden during that period. It was the time of persecution and the missionary had to endure the persecution.
After his arrival and time spent there, the Shimabara Rebellion was defeated.
Silence
is considered as the author’s supreme achievement. It won the Tanizaki Prize in the year 1966. It is also regarded as one of the 20th century’s finest novels.
The story is based on the theme of a silent God who accompanies a believer in difficult times. A part of the novel is presented in the form of a letter by the central character.
It is believed that the author had gone through religious discrimination in Japan, racism in France, and a debilitating bout with tuberculosis. All these experienced inspired the author to give them a shape in the form of a novel.
The novel basically explores the silence of God when there is suffering all around.
The story is based on real events and the fictionalized account of those events is highly admirable. The real events occurred in Japan after a golden period of Christianity.
It was the time period in which the remaining Christians were persecuted and tortured. The aim of the
