    Chapter One: Introduction

    Thomas Paine was born on 9th of February, 1737, in Thetford, which was a very important town and coach stage post in rural Norfolk, England. It is said that he was born Thomas Pain, but he changed his name to Thomas Paine.

    He was one of the most popular English-American political activists, authors, political theorists, and revolutionaries.

    When the American Revolution began, he wrote two highly influential pamphlets. It is considered that Thomas Paine greatly inspired the Patriots in 1776 to declare and fight for their independence from Great Britain.

    His ideas often reflected that he was passionately in favour of human rights. It is generally said that Thomas Pain was a corset-maker by trade, a journalist by profession, and a propagandist by inclination.

    Thomas Paine’s Home

    Though Paine was born in England, he moved to the British American colonies in the year 1774. He was able to do so with the help of Benjamin Franklin.

    When he arrived in the British American colonies, the American Revolution was just beginning. He was able to take part in that revolution.

    Common Sense and The American Crisis were two of his greatest pamphlets which were widely read and appreciated. It was his greatest contribution to the American Revolution.

    Through his writing, Thomas Paine advocated colonial America’s independence from Great Britain.
