An Illustrated Dictionary of Cricket Terms - Students' Academy
Introduction
There are more expressions and terms in the game of cricket than any other sports. A newcomer, who is not acquainted with these terms, is definitely going to be bewildered.
A layman can understand the general terms like crease, sixer, four, bowled, bowler, batsman, wicketkeeper, etc., but he will be helpless when terms like asking rate, wrong 'un, doosra, or beamer are spoken in front of him.
If you are a cricket enthusiast and you do not want to look like a fool, this is the dictionary for you.
Cricket commentators have a really annoying habit of inventing new words. In this dictionary, you will get the meanings and definitions of such terms.

A
Arm Ball
A spinner bowls this delivery. It is a ball which does not turn. A batsman expects it to turn but it goes straight. It continues to keep a straight line.
Ashes
The Ashes Series is played between Australia and England for The Ashes. There is an interesting story behind the origin of this series.
The term ‘Ashes’ came into existence in the form of a satirical obituary which was published in a British newspaper. The newspaper was The Sporting Times.
It came immediately after Australia won their first Test Match on English soil in 1882 at The Oval.
The obituary published in the newspaper said that English cricket had died and its body will be cremated and the ashes will be taken to Australia.
Asking Rate
When a team happens to be chasing the score of the team that played first, the runs required per over for the chasing team to win is called asking rate. For example the team batting first requires 60 runs from 10 overs. In this case the asking rate will be 10 runs per over.
B
Ball
The cricket ball happens to be red for first class and Test cricket and white for one-day matches. A cricket ball weighs 5.5 ounces for men, 5 ounces for women’s cricket, and 4.75 ounces for junior cricket.
In Test Cricket the bowling team can take a new ball after 80 overs.
