EXCERPT:
It was too much. The smell, the sound of the place hadn't changed even after more than twenty years. Little things were different than I remembered but not much. I hadn't played a show in my hometown since I was eighteen. That was the year I headed off 'to make it' in the music business. I guess I did it. Some days I feel like I have, others...well, let’s just say that some days I feel like I’ve made it. This morning I have a meeting with my first music teacher and his students. I'm supposed to give them some insight, some inspiration. I feel less like a good example and more like a cautionary tale today. The saying ‘You can’t go home again’ kept popping into my head.

The last night I played here I signed the contract that started my career. It screwed me out of a lot of money but I used it to make a name for myself. It also meant the end of my band. Despite all the setbacks, I kept moving and kept working until I scratched out a life for myself. Some of the gigs weren’t much to brag about, but that's the way it is. I am the sum total of where I've been and what I've done. What bothers me are the people and places I left behind in the process.

I left someone behind the last night I was here. That night I met an amazing girl who interviewed me for the local paper. She'd written a story about my band and wanted to follow up with me on the night the label signed me. I wanted to follow up with her for my own reasons. We spent the night celebrating with the band and then capped it off with a night I'd never forgotten. Her name was Sonia. She had a soft, sweet, childlike voice and a body that was built for sex.

A diverse blend of music floated through the rooms of Nick Foxx’s house as he grew up. His family listened to and played blues, jazz, folk, gospel, country, rock’n’roll and classical music and they all fascinated him. Late in the night, he’d sit with his father and grandfather while they told stories and sang their favorites.Professors and artists mingled with ranchers and farmers around picnic tables in Nick's backyard to enjoy fried fish, barbecue, and good music as the neighborhood children chased fireflies in the twilight. The music he heard filled his head with dreams of being a professional musician. He played at local dances, clubs, and bars before he could drive. By twenty-one, he had performed for crowds of thousands, heard himself on the radio, and sang on live TV. His music has been used in advertising, film, television, theater, and played in concert halls. Records he worked on decorate the walls of his office and home.Nick began publishing ebooks in 2008 with Anonymous Publishing. While writing under the pen name, Nicky Faulkes, Nick’s work “The Time Of My Life” won the Earth Day Story Contest on Literotica.com and gained him the praise of peers. It encouraged him to keep writing and telling stories.Nick is a semi-retired composer and musician, happily married for over twenty years to a beautiful, loving woman who is the love of his life. Nick’s stories are a blend of his personal experiences and fantasies that merge to bring genuine, relatable characters and engaging tales to the page. This story contains sexually explicit acts involving consenting adults. It is not intended for minors under the age of eighteen. All characters depicted in this work of fiction are 18 years of age or older.

These are works of fiction. Names, characters, places, brands, media, and incidents are either the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. The authors acknowledge the trademarked status and trademark owners of various products referenced in this work of fiction, which have been used without permission. The publication/use of these trademarks is not authorized, associated with, or sponsored by the trademark owners.

Please remember that you’re reading fiction. In the world of fiction and fantasy, sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies and the emotional ramifications of intimacy are controllable by the author. In the real world, that’s not the case. Please practice safe sex and take care of yourself and one another. Character’s physical descriptions may be idealized in my work, but I feel it’s valid and justified. Because each of us is beautiful to those who love us and we look perfect when the lights go out. I hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I do writing them.

It was too much. The smell, the sound, even the customers of that old dive hadn't changed in over twenty years. I hadn't played a show in my hometown since I was eighteen and ready to leave for good. That was the year I headed off 'to make it' in the music business. I guess I did it. I was supposed to give them some insight, some inspiration. But I feel less like an example and more like a cautionary tale today. The saying ‘You can’t go home again’ kept popping into my head.

It also meant the end of my band. They didn’t sign anybody but me. I felt like a traitor but it was my only chance and I took it. Over the years, I tried to bring some of them with me but it didn’t work like I’d hoped. Some were tied to home others just weren’t good enough to make it. Still, they were my friends and I had to try. Despite the setbacks, I kept working until I scratched out a life for myself. Some of the gigs weren’t much to brag about, but that's the way it is.
