I really enjoyed the overall storyline and the universe created by the author. The adventure and intrigue were well written, which made it an enjoyable read and kept me listening. Unfortunately, the relationships, drama, and dialogue between the characters was so ridiculous it was almost a deal breaker for me. It read like a middle school kid writing about young adult college students. It was almost like a mature, talented author wrote the book, but replaced all discussion of sex and relationships with a child’s writings. It was so awkward. As long as the characters were interacting through the action of the story, the writing was great. My favorite part was all the magical creatures and the character development of the familiars. Just skip the attempts at intimate scenes and enjoy the rest of the read.
