About this audiobook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Cosmopolitan, Goodreads, PopSugar, and more!

From the author of the Goodreads Choice Award winner The Spanish Love Deception, the eagerly anticipated follow-up featuring Rosie Graham and Lucas Martín, who are forced to share a New York apartment.

Rosie Graham has a problem. A few, actually. She just quit her well paid job to focus on her secret career as a romance writer. She hasn’t told her family and now has terrible writer’s block. Then, the ceiling of her New York apartment literally crumbles on her. Luckily she has her best friend Lina’s spare key while she’s out of town. But Rosie doesn’t know that Lina has already lent her apartment to her cousin Lucas, who Rosie has been stalking—for lack of a better word—on Instagram for the last few months. Lucas seems intent on coming to her rescue like a Spanish knight in shining armor. Only this one strolls around the place in a towel, has a distracting grin, and an irresistible accent. Oh, and he cooks.

Lucas offers to let Rosie stay with him, at least until she can find some affordable temporary housing. And then he proposes an outrageous experiment to bring back her literary muse and meet her deadline: He’ll take her on a series of experimental dates meant to jump-start her romantic inspiration. Rosie has nothing to lose. Her silly, online crush is totally under control—but Lucas’s time in New York has an expiration date, and six weeks may not be enough, for either her or her deadline.

Would've LOVED it if the male narrator wouldn't force his voice so low. Became a little cringey sometimes. But overall such a cute book

It was a sweet Meet cute but Rosie’s voice was somewhat annoying. And Lena’s? So aggravating. Lucas’ voice though… super hot.

You know how it’s irritating when YA books have teens speaking like adults? Well imagine how much MORE annoying it is when adult romance books have grown-ass men and women speaking and thinking like teenagers!! Fuck me. Six chapters in and my gag reflex couldn’t take it anymore and I was in danger of a full-on hurl-fest. I hate these characters. If I met them in real life I’d still hate them. It’s not fucking cute or adorable or any of the other sweet shit. Grow-the-fuck up! Ugh!!

Like Spanish Love Deception, the American Roommate Experiment begins with our FMC having a super awkward encounter with the MMC. BUT also just like SLD, once I was past the cringe-worthy opening scene, Rosie’s character blossomed and unfurled. Shes funny and teasing, caring and anxious. She’s got a lot on the go, and a lot on her mind, and so it becomes clearer why that cringy beginning happens.

And Oh My bookie goodness, do I swoon! Which, for me, was surprising because it is not enemies to lovers. Lucas is a suave Spanish surfer, and Lena’s cousin. He’s the one that couldn’t make it to the wedding. He is thoughtful, considerate, sexy, a talented cook and full of secrets. He’s wonderful, and like Rosie, I couldn’t help but daydream about him. He’s so wonderful, and truthfully it is Elena Armas’ superior storytelling that makes his character compelling instead of relying on a trope to drive the characters through the story.

This book is absolutely stuffed with dreamy swoony (spicy) moments, laugh out loud moments, and relatable situations that had me entirely caught up in the story. And if you like the One Bed trope…this one has one - everything…one bed, one studio apartment, one stool.

I think I would have enjoyed it better but the guy that did Lucas's voice drove me a bit crazy. He tried too hard to be deep and raspy and it was off putting. The book was in many ways way too predictable. The last 2 hours I was just waiting for it to be over.

I like the story between Lucas and Rosie, but I am not a fan of keeping secrets part. She has secrets she won’t tell her family but continues to not tell them. I had to skip a few chapters of the internal struggle with her hypocrisy.

It was okay. Not worth the hype TBH. The characters weren’t well developed, and felt like they talked kinda immature for their age.

It’s such a good story but the narrator for Lucas was ghastly, like why did they have him read this book. He was using a whisper hush voice that I guess is suppose to be sultry but I have news for you it’s NOT!! God it borderline made me not want to finish the book
