About this audiobook

Life in a small town can be tough. It can be even tougher when you're a witch whose magic regularly backfires. But Summer Thorne only wants one thing: to create the perfect sanctuary for unwanted animals. Nothing and no one is going to stop her. Not even the sexy sheriff who is determined to shut down her rescue center. And certainly not the laboratory where she illegally obtained her mischievous chimpanzee, Morty.

Sheriff Cooper Carlyle has one goal: to keep his town safe. That includes his stubborn neighbor, Summer, whether she wants him to or not. When the animals of Summer's menagerie get loose and create havoc, he decides enough is enough. But things aren't always as they appear, and Coop stumbles upon the secret the Thorne sisters have been hiding.

Coop and Summer discover Morty holds the key to unlock a twenty-year-old mystery surrounding the death of Summer's mother. Now Coop is faced with breaking the law he is sworn to uphold in order to protect Summer and her beloved pet from a threat more dangerous than any of them imagined.

I remember reading this awhile back and honestly I thought I’d enjoyed it. Well apparently my taste in books has changed because I couldn’t even make it 20% into the book without wanting to be rid of it. I have several issues with it….

-the Carlyle brothers. To start with Cooper is a complete and utter a-hole. Couldn’t stand the sanctimonious jackass. I mean I get that Summer is in the wrong and the animals really do need better supervision but geez every time he’s around her he’s just mean, spiteful and a jerk. There had to have been a better way to handle things. Add to that both him and his brother have volatile tempers and good hero’s they are not.

-the Thorne sisters. Honestly I didn’t like them either. THEY WERE IN THE WRONG. I mean the chimp was attacking and threatening a man and she gets all bent out of shape bc the sheriff threatened to shot him. Oh not my baby, he wouldn’t hurt a fly. So what the chimp is more important then the innocent bystander who was just trying to get in his car. The chimp dented the freaking car!!!!! They were all just completely selfish. Instead of fixing a problem they just kept adding to it and they did it out of a need to protect these animals. Screw the living, breathing humans who are being affected by them. Plus she plans on bringing in a LION! She can’t control and elephant and a monkey but sure let’s being a lion into the mix. Selfish, self-absorbed bs.

Ok rant done. I’m done. Time to find a new book.

This one caught me by surprise in a good way. There were moments I was a bit frustrated with one of the lead characters. I thought he was a jerk, but had grown a better understanding later in the book. There is plenty of mystery about everyone's intentions. Who's good, who's bad and how are they related to Summer. Not all of that is answered in this book. We will see how many more family members and motives pop up in the next book.
I'm certain I will continue to follow this author. So far she has a good ability to keep plots building, add mystery and romance, without dragging it out too long. When authors drag, my mind wanders. I get distracted and then have to keep re-reading or drop the book out of boredom.
