About this series
River Williams is good at two things: swimming and conflict. Becoming the king of the underwater dominion his mermaid mother abandoned should be right up his alley. It is, until he learns what kind of mess his deposed uncle left for him to clean up. And with his little sister recently married and coronated in the family’s other ancestral territory, he feels has to be everywhere at once to help smooth the transitions of power.
The absolute last thing he needs at the moment is to have to deal with his human ex.
Since childhood, Aliah pictured herself settling down with a wealthy go-getter who could guarantee her a stable future. Her fling with fellow military brat River as a teen was the one relationship she stumbled into without premeditation. She had to outgrow him, but she could never forget him.
She can't.
The same magic that allows River to hurl and shape water decided long ago that she would be his.
Despite what the magic says, Aliah's not prepared for the tumultuous world the Williams family now lives in, and River refuses to be one more stepping stone for Aliah's upward climb. If she can't convince him that her intentions are different than before, and if he can't recognize the strength the extroverted socialite could bring to a healing kingdom, the two will live forever adrift, lacking the equilibrium both desperately need.

- First in a new series about the Williams siblings of Theapoke, North Carolina! - Brook Williams was raised to avoid drawing attention at all costs. At twenty-eight, she wonders if her mermaid mother’s paranoia isolated Brook and her siblings from society to a harmful extreme. When Brook intervenes to save a stranger from a careening truck, however, she quickly learns her mother’s obsessive concerns were entirely justified. There’s just something about Brook that Cooper Koning can’t get off his mind. At first, he thinks his infatuation is due to the concussion sustained when she shoved him out of traffic. Then he realizes that she’s simply perfect…perfect to free him from a looming future being the king of Souersland. His candid Hail Mary proposal comes with few strings attached: Brook marries him, he’s tossed from the line of succession, she gets a wad of cash for her struggling swim school, and they go their separate ways. Of course, Cooper soon realizes that he’d be foolish to let her go. Now that she’s left her little world, though, the mermaid skeletons in Brook’s closet can no longer stay hidden. Her mother left the sea to escape a burdensome duty, and now that duty is Brook’s. And in a strange twist of fate, that mantle may mean that it isn’t even Cooper’s human family who should rule Souersland, but Brook’s magical one. Can a relationship built on fables endure? Or will the star-crossed spouses quickly decide their differences are too tremendous to overcome?

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The only thing I had a problem with was expressly mentioned at the beginning. That was the connection between the people, the history and places. However, I decided just to push through while and just get the gist of the book. So as author said it maybe a little difficult. I was unable to get audio of the first book but I’m sure that would have helped.
