Description
Inge De Lathauwer is the founder of Sumba Hospitality Foundation but everyone calls her "Ibu Inge" on the remote Indonesian island of Sumba. As a lifelong charity worker, she had previously witnessed the disastrous consequences of poorly planned charities. To better understand the dreams and aspirations of the Sumbanese people, Inge decided to spend more time listening. Not only to their stories of hardship and struggle but also to their hopes and ideas for the future. The idea was born of building a hotel school that would teach young Sumbanese people the hospitality skills they needed to contribute to the tourism development on the island. Sumba is one of the poorest regions in Indonesia. While tourism is gradually developing, Sumba Hospitality Foundation believes responsible tourism is the only way to protect this fragile island in a way local communities can benefit. To end the circle of poverty, young adults are encouraged to dream big and empower themselves through education, training, and work experience. Last but not least, Sumba Hospitality Foundation aims to raise environmental awareness with students, tourists, and local communities.
