LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy award winner Jayden Daniels has exhausted his NCAA eligibility and will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. Backup Garrett Nussmeier has been waiting patiently behind the scenes for his opportunity at the starting job at LSU. Nussmeier could have transferred after Daniels won the job in 2022. Heck, he could've transferred before the 2023 season. Countless programs, both in the SEC and outside of it, could have used the gunslinger's services. But he decided to stay dedicated to LSU and stick it out with the Tigers in hopes that 2024 would be his year, and in all likelihood it will be. But even with Garrett Nussmeier as the incumbent, should the Tigers still consider bringing in an established veteran through the transfer portal?
Without Daniels, the Tigers have Nuss and true freshman Rickie Collins who redshirted in the 2023 season. They also intend to sign 4-star quarterback Colin Hurley in the 2024 class. It is a crowded room, but it isn't an experienced room outside of Nussmeier. Could the Tigers' insurance policy be waiting around in the portal? Who would that quarterback be?
