LSU Tigers head football coach Brian Kelly shared injury updates ahead of his teams road trip to Tuscaloosa this weekend and shared that starting DL Mekhi Wingo underwent surgery during the bye week and will be out for the next six weeks, which could end his season depending on LSU's postseason bid. Wingo was granted illustrious number 18 for this season for his leadership on and off the field so being without his leadership and dominant presence on the field will be a huge hit for this LSU defense that has struggled this season.
But Wingo's absence only scratches the surface of the bad news defensively as Kelly shared that the secondary will be without Zy Alexander who is dealing with a leg injury after the Army game, Denver Harris, and Duce Chestnut against Alabama leaving a trio of true freshmen, Sage Ryan, and. Laterrance Welch as their available corners. While those players do not have a lot of experience and will have a tough test heading into Bryant-Denny Stadium, coach Kelly remains optimistic, “I think we’ve been at it long enough where these guys are ready to go. They’ve got no choice – these guys are ready to play. They are young, many have said inexperienced. I get that they haven’t played a lot of SEC games. But these guys are really good players and they’ll compete for LSU.”
So what does that mean for the Tigers against Alabama? Can they do what few have done, go into Bryant-Denny Stadium and beat Nick Saban two years in a row, with such little depth defensively?
