LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has been playing absolutely out of his mind all season long. He has carried the LSU Tigers to their 4-2 record and did as much as he possibly could even in their two losses to Florida State and Ole Miss. Between his ability as a passer and threat with his legs, Daniels has proven to be more valuable to the LSU Tigers than any other player is to their respective team. Is it enough to get him to New York City as a Heisman Trophy finalist at the end of the season?
Daniels currently has the sixth best odds to win the Heisman Trophy, behind Washington's Michael Penix Jr., USC's Caleb Williams, Oregon's Bo Nix, Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel, and UNC's Drake Maye. Daniels passing stats are comparable to the quarterbacks with the best odds, having put up just shy of 2,000 passing yards through six games and 19 touchdowns with only two interceptions. But what Daniels has that separates him from not just the rest of the Heisman contenders but the rest of the country is his running ability. Daniels without a doubt is the best running quarterback in the country, as reflected by his 75 carries for 422 yards and four touchdowns. Daniels is the seventh leading rusher in the SEC, racking up more yards than seven starting running backs in the SEC. He makes massive throws, takes care of the football, and the imminent threat of his run game forces defenses to pay attention to his escapability. He is doing something that no other player in America can do – that alone should be deserving of an invitation to the Heisman Trophy ceremony in December.
