SEC coaches, athletic directors, and leaders are gathered in Destin, Florida this week for the annual SEC Spring Meetings to discuss pressing conference business. One of the biggest discussions on the docket: how should the SEC organize schedules once the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners join the conference?
There were two potential models that emerged once Texas and Oklahoma announced they would join the SEC one year ahead of schedule: the nine game 3-6 model and the eight game 1-7 model. The nine game model would maintain three annual rivalries with six rotating opponents while the 1-7 model would only maintain one annual rivalry with seven rotating games. While many college football fans and analysts believed the nine game schedule was a no-brainer, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said, "not so fast my friends."
“This is a league at the forefront of college athletics,” Sankey said. “Now, whether change happens immediately is part of a careful consideration and a deep consideration."
