Description
Today, I am blessed to have here with me Dr. Nathan Bryan. He is an international leader in molecular medicine and nitric oxide biochemistry. Specifically, Dr. Bryan was the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as indispensable nutrients required for optimal cardiovascular health. He was the first to demonstrate and discover an endocrine function of nitric oxide via the formation of S-nitrosoglutathione and inorganic nitrite. In this episode, Dr. Bryan takes a massive deep dive into nitric oxide; it is the essential molecule produced in every mammal. Without nitric oxide, you can become immunocompromised, develop high blood pressure, and lose memory, among other health problems. Luckily, Dr. Bryan explains precisely what you need to do to improve your nitric oxide production and what you need to stop doing so you don’t get in the way of your body’s ability to produce nitric oxide. Tune in as we chat about nitrates in vegetables, the importance of nose breathing, and how nitric oxide can prevent problems with Covid. 4 Secrets to Mastering Keto Masterclass. [03:15] Nitric Oxide: The Most Important Molecule Produced In Every Mammal Nitric oxide is one of the most important molecules produced in all mammals. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule that helps cell-to-cell communication. Once nitric oxide is produced, it activates several target receptors and starts this signaling cascade. Nitric oxide is how red blood cells deliver oxygen to individual cells of the body. When you become nitric oxide deficient, there are a lot of things that go wrong: You become immunocompromised You develop high blood pressure You develop sexual dysfunction You lose your memory You get vascular dementia You become exercise intolerant [04:35] Insulin Resistance Can Happen When You Become Nitric Oxide Deficient When you become nitric oxide deficient, it can lead to insulin resistance. When we consume carbs, there's an increase in blood sugar, our body has to dispose of that, and it does that through insulin secretion by the pancreas. Insulin tells the cell to clear glucose from the body. Without nitric oxide being produced, the terminal step of glucose uptake doesn’t happen. If you can’t make nitric oxide, you become insulin resistant. [05:50] Ditch Your Mouthwash and Antacids To Improve Nitric Oxide Production Stop doing the things that disrupt nitric oxide production and start doing the things that promote nitric oxide production. What disrupts nitric oxide production? You are not getting enough nitrate in your diet You are using mouthwash and antiseptic rinses You are using antacids As Dr. Bryan says, it’s better to have bad breath than a heart attack. [11:20] The Connection Between Nitric Oxide, Blood Pressure, and Cardiovascular Disease Nitric oxide is the primary vasodilation in the lining of the blood vessel. When nitric oxide is produced, it opens up the lumen of the blood vessel. Basically, nitric oxide is what controls and regulates blood pressure. People who get on blood pressure medication typically don’t respond with better blood pressure because it does not affect their nitric oxide production. We can treat cardiovascular disease by increasing our ability to produce nitric oxide. [19:50] Nasal Breathing Will Improve Your Nitric Oxide Production and Lower Blood Pressure We are designed to breathe through the nose and eat with the mouth. When we breathe through our nose, it t
