Description

I'm sharing my personal insight into a disordered relationship with food and lots and lots of research to illustrate that we are not alone in this regard. I delve into the research surrounding Dietitians, Doctors & Nurses but I think it's relevant no matter what discipline you work in. If you're not a HCP, you probably know someone who is so today's episode is still worth a listen. You might assume that dietitians always eat healthy. I assumed this too, and felt pressured to do so, so I tried (a million times) to give up sweet things, and I binged every. single. time. Healthcare professionals struggle with our relationship with food too. Unfortunately, it's a massive taboo, afterall, we are the ones who are supposed to be helping others. If you are a HCP and you binge eat, I'm with you - I understand the shame and guilt that surrounds the big mess that is binge eating. Primary reference for dietitians and ED: (PDF) A Review of Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating amongst Nutrition Students and Dietetic Professionals (researchgate.net)Meta-analysis medicals students: Eating disorders risk among medical students: a global systematic review and meta-analysis | Semantic ScholarDoctor's personal account of being a Doctor and having anorexia: Why Doctors With Eating Disorders Don't Ask for Help | Psychology Today80% of Doctors and Nurses eat just one or two meals a day: 80% of NHS Doctors and Nurses eat just ‘one or two meals a day’ | Asian Sunday NewspaperDisordered eating and job stress among nurses: Disordered eating and job stress among nurses - KING - 2009 - Journal of Nursing Management - Wiley Online LibraryExample of Weight Stigma in Nurses - Trigger warning, fatphobia: Systematic review: What works to address obesity in nurses? | Occupational Medicine | Oxford Academic (oup.com)Orthorexia & Dietitians Food addiction, orthorexia, and food-related stress among dietetics students | SpringerLinkStigma & treatment of eating disorders in Ireland: (PDF) Stigma and Treatment of Eating Disorders in Ireland: Health Professionals' Knowledge and Attitudes | Niamh McNamara and Lesley O'Hara - Academia.edu
