About this ebook

David is one of the better known Biblical characters, due especially to his defeat of the giant Goliath, which has become a motif for many stories of underdogs winning over formidable foes; and also due to David committing adultery with Bathsheba, which led to the murder of her husband. David’s life teaches us that God does not hide the ugly parts of our lives, while accomplishing His purposes in spite of our failings!

    INTRODUCTION

What we will see in this book is that David was as sinful as any other human being, for God says at Romans 3:10, there is none righteous, not even one, and also at Romans 3:23, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And despite this, God said of David at Acts 13:22 in part, …He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.'

For what we always need to remember is that we are but vessels of earth (noting Genesis 2:7), which means that whatever we accomplish in this life is because we serve A GREAT GOD! David discovered this in the course of His life. One only has to read the Psalms that God led him to write to see this! And so, as believers, we all need to keep in mind what God says to all of us at 2 Corinthians 4:16, which was no doubt true of David during his life, as we will see in this book, Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.

One day soon we will all set aside this body of flesh as believers and be clothed with a spiritual body to last forever (noting 1 Corinthians 15:42-44). David’s hope extended past the grave, as he is quoted as exclaiming at Acts 2:26-28, [26] Therefore my heart was glad and my tongue exulted; moreover my flesh also will live in hope; [27] Because You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. [28] You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of gladness with Your presence.' May this be true also of all of those now reading this book!

Please note that there is an Addenda at the back of the book, which has four sections. In Addendum A, we have information regarding the four ages of time. In Addendum B, we have information regarding the two comings from Heaven to earth of God’s Son in time. In Addendum C, we have an exposition of how and for what purpose God raised up the nation of Israel in time! And then in Addendum D, we have a presentation of the gospel, which is the good news that God has given in His word regarding His Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, for any reader who might not have as yet this vital personal relationship with God, through faith in His Son.

What should also be mentioned before closing this Introduction, because we are all somewhat curious by nature, is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering and Management in the Corporate offices of two large utilities, God called His servant as a non-denominational evangelist in early 1999, and then sent him out over two thousand miles, away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, which is where His servant has been, and is still serving Him, as evangelist, author, and counselor. The author is a widower with three adopted children, all now married with a family of their own.

Since the author’s two websites are no longer active, one may access the books, and places to purchase, by typing Roger Henri Trepanier, books in any search engine. This book, and all the author’s books, are available for purchase in print format or as an eBook on all major distribution channels.

And please keep in mind that ALL the author’s books are BIBLICAL, in the sense that they look at people and events from a Biblical worldview, and also often from a prophetic standpoint! And so, even though a book may look at a President Trump, or current events, it is never from a political standpoint, but always from a Biblical standpoint!

And now my prayer is that God will richly bless you as you read this book, and greatly minister to every need in your life, as only God can! To Him be all praise, honor, and glory, with thanksgiving, both now and forevermore! Amen.

The Lord said to Samuel, Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them.

    1 Samuel 8:7

    CHAPTER ONE

The nation of Israel rejects God and asks for a king!

The best place to begin speaking of David is to start with Saul, who was Israel’s first king, for the lives of these two men are often intertwined in God’s account of the life of David. And so, we note from 1 Samuel 8:1-8 that at the time that Samuel was leading the nation of Israel as judge (noting 1 Samuel 3:1-21), the elders of Israel came to Samuel asking for a king to rule over them, as we now there read, [1] And it came about WHEN SAMUEL WAS OLD THAT HE APPOINTED HIS SONS’ JUDGES OVER ISRAEL. [2] Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judging in Beersheba. [3] HIS SONS, HOWEVER, DID NOT WALK IN HIS WAYS, but turned aside after dishonest gain and took bribes and perverted justice. [4] Then ALL THE ELDERS OF ISRAEL gathered together and CAME TO SAMUEL at Ramah; [5] and they said to him, Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now APPOINT A KING FOR US TO JUDGE US LIKE ALL THE NATIONS. [6] But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed to the Lord. [7] THE LORD SAID TO SAMUEL, Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for THEY HAVE NOT REJECTED YOU, BUT THEY HAVE REJECTD ME FROM BEING KING OVER THEM. [8] Like all the deeds which they have done since the day that I brought them up from Egypt even to this day — IN THAT THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME AND SERVED OTHER GODS — SO THEY ARE DOING TO YOU ALSO."

There are a number of truths that we need to grasp from what God tells us here. The first truth is that although Samuel was a believer, who had been appointed judge over Israel by God, nevertheless, his two sons were unbelievers and the elders of the nation of Israel did the right thing in rejecting them from being their judges!

The second truth to grasp here is that when the elders then asked Samuel to appoint a king over them, like all the nations, they were not rejecting Samuel from being judge over them, but rather they were rejecting God from being King over them, as we see at verse 8:7! This shows us that the rot of unbelief had already set in among the sons of Israel.

The third truth to see here is that the nation of Israel did not ask for a king over them because Samuel’s sons were unbelievers, but rather because the sons of Israel had already forsaken God and served other gods from the time that God delivered them from Egypt (noting Deuteronomy 32:16-18; Joshua 24:14; Nehemiah 9:18,19; Amos 5:25,26; Acts 7:42,43), as God makes clear at verse 8:8! God does not chastise Samuel for raising unbelieving sons here (as He did with the high priest, Eli, at 1 Samuel 3:12,13), for God knew in advance that this would happen and uses their sin in order to bring His own plans to pass (noting Deuteronomy 17:14,15)!

"Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of
