    INTRODUCTION

What is of importance about Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is that God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, was now on earth in human flesh, and The Kingdom Heaven was supposed to be established with Himself as King over all nations of earth through the nation of Israel. And so, in this sermon God was making known what kind of subjects He wanted to see as part of that Kingdom here on earth! And even though that Kingdom was never established at the first coming from Heaven to earth of God’s Son, due to the nation of Israel rejecting Him and having Him crucified, nevertheless it has importance for us now because the spiritual truths shared in this sermon are still applicable for us today; and therefore all believers would greatly benefit in reading it and living in accordance with its teachings!

And there are four things that we should be aware of at the outset. The first is that the Biblical text that God gave will be included as part of the text of this book, so that the reader will not have to turn to the Bible to read that text. It will appear in italics. Then secondly, each chapter has been broken into smaller sections, which will begin with italicized text, with a brief explanation supplied as a help of what is covered in that particular section. And thirdly, whenever an added word appears in the Biblical text that was supplied by the translators from the original Greek into English as a help to the reader, it will be noted, if it affects our understanding of the text. Then fourthly, at times comments are supplied by the author, which will be in brackets in the text of God’s word as an additional help to the reader.

Then we are to also note that there is an Addenda at the back of the book with three sections. In Addendum A, there is a brief outline of the four ages of time, for any reading the book who might not be familiar with this information. Then in Addendum B, there is a brief outline of the two comings from Heaven to earth in time of God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, for any who may not be familiar with this information either. At Addendum C, we have a presentation of the gospel, which is the good news that God has given in His word regarding His Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, for any readers who might not have as yet this vital personal relationship with God, through faith in His Son.

What should also be mentioned before closing this Introduction, because we are all somewhat curious by nature, is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering and Management in the Corporate offices of two large utilities, God called His servant as a non-denominational evangelist in early 1999, and then sent him out over two thousand miles, away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, which is where His servant has been, and is still serving Him, as evangelist, author, and counselor. The author is a widower with three adopted children, all now married with a family of their own.

Please note the two websites listed below, which have been established for the purpose of interacting with readers and for gospel ministry:

And now my prayer is that God will richly bless you as you read this book, and greatly minister to every need in your life, as only God can! To Him be all praise, honor, and glory, with thanksgiving, both now and forevermore! Amen.

    MATTHEW 5

    Verses 1-48

A brief introduction to the book of Matthew in preparation for Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount

What would prove useful as we begin is to provide a brief introduction to what has been commonly known as ‘Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, consisting of Matthew Chapters 5,6, and 7. What would have taken place so far, before this sermon was given, is that at Matthew 1, God gave the genealogy of His eternal Son, Who was now coming to earth in a human body that His Father had prepared for Him in the womb of a virgin Jewish girl (noting Matthew 1:18-25 with Hebrews 10:5), who was a believer and whose name was Mary.

Since God’s Son was coming from Heaven to earth as the rightful Heir to be King on the throne over the nation of Israel, then the genealogy He provides at verses 1 to 17 relates to the fact that Jesus was born as a descendant of Abraham – who was the father of the nation of Israel, in terms of God having made that nation from him and his descendants through his son Isaac, noting Genesis 12:2 and Genesis 21:12 – and also a descendant of David, the first king that God provided over the nation of Israel who was a believer.

And so, this is why God begins the book of Matthew at verse 1:1 by saying, The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham, for in this way He connects the New Testament, which begins with the book of Matthew, with the nation of Israel in the Old Testament, which goes from the call of Abraham at Genesis 12:1 and extends to the end of Malachi.

Then at Matthew 2, God relates the birth of God’s Son into this world and immediately makes the connection to His being born as the rightful heir to the throne over the nation of Israel, when He states at Matthew 2:1,2 – through the visit of magi from the east to Jerusalem, as the capital of the nation of Israel – what we there read, [1] Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, [2] Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." Then in the rest of Matthew 2, we have the brief sojourn in Egypt of Joseph, Mary, and of The Lord Jesus as an infant, before settling in Nazareth upon their return to the land of Israel.

At Matthew 3, God then introduces us to John the Baptist, whom God raised as a prophet and also as the forerunner to the coming of His Son to earth in human flesh, and specifically the start of His public ministry at the age of thirty, which now takes place with Jesus’ water baptism at the hands of John the Baptist, which we are told about in the latter part of Chapter 3. The Lord Jesus’ water baptism was His way of identifying with sinners at the start of His public ministry, which was later to end by His identifying with a sinful humanity in dying at the cross the death due the sins of the whole human race!

Then at Matthew 4, we have God’s Son undergoing the same three temptations at the hands of Satan, the devil, that Adam and Eve underwent at his hands back in the garden of Eden. God’ s Son is now seen to be victorious over these three major temptations of pride, greed, and lust, by which the devil likes to keep the whole race in bondage to himself by. We also have the calling to ministry of four of Jesus’ disciples, who later became apostles, these being Peter, Andrew, James, and John, with chapter 4 then closing with God’s Son continuing his public ministry in Galilee, which is where we then see Him give His Sermon on the Mount, having by this time large crowds following Him.

A brief introduction to the Kingdom of Heaven as background to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount

What would now prove useful is to see that Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount was actually given in preparation for the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. And what is meant here is that we have seen so far that God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, was now on earth in human flesh at His first coming from Heaven and was the rightful heir as King over the nation of Israel. In other words, all that needed to happen for Him to be crowned as King and to start to reign here on earth as part of the Kingdom of Heaven was for the nation of Israel, through its leadership, to accept Him as King, by believing on Him for salvation!

And so, that is why when John the Baptist was raised of God as prophet and forerunner to His precious Son, he was led of God to announce to the nation of Israel His coming with the words, as we now read at Matthew 3:1,2, [1] Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, [2] REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND. The reason John the Baptist had to say, Repent," was because the majority of those making up the nation of Israel were at that time in unbelief, including its leadership. What this meant is that the Kingdom of Heaven could not be established on earth until the nation of Israel came to faith in God through believing in God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, Who had now come from Heaven to earth.

We are to also notice that when God’s Son started His public ministry, He preached the exact same message as John the Baptist, noting what we now read at Matthew 4:17, From that time Jesus began to preach and say, REPENT, FOR THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS AT HAND. As can be realized, it is impossible to establish a Kingdom on earth, in this case, the Kingdom of Heaven, if those who are to be the subjects of that Kingdom are unwilling to accept The Person Whom God Himself appointed to be King over the Kingdom of Heaven!

As anyone knows, who has read the book of Matthew, the nation of Israel never did believe in God’s Son while on earth at His first coming from Heaven to earth, and in fact ended up having Him put to death on a cross, declaring at that time what they said to Pilate, the Roman governor, as we read at John 19:15, So they cried out, Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him! Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered (speaking on behalf of the nation of Israel in unbelief), WE HAVE NO KING BUT CEASAR." What this meant then is that The Kingdom of Heaven will NOT be established on earth UNTIL the second stage of the second coming of God’s Son from Heaven to earth, which will only be at the start of the fourth age of time, for that will be when the nation of Israel will turn in faith to God’s Son, believe in Him, and then accept Him as King over them!

There are two questions which might arise at this point in the mind of some readers. The one question is: If The Kingdom of Heaven relates only to the nation of Israel as its subjects, then what does that have to do with the rest of the nations of the earth, who are not Jews? And the answer is that what we read in the book of Matthew – as is also true in Mark, Luke, and John, including Acts 1 and all the Old Testament from Genesis 12:1 onward – is that all we read there takes place in THE SECOND AGE OF TIME, when God was dealing with the nations of the earth through the nation of Israel. In other words, the nation of Israel was simply a REPRESENTATIVE NATION, in that God chose one nation knowing that what this one nation did, then ALL NATIONS ON EARTH would likewise do if they had been chosen as a representative nation instead of the nation of Israel! What this further means then is that when the nation of Israel rejected God’s Son and had Him crucified, any other nation on earth would likewise had dome the same had it been in its place, which therefore means that all human beings alive on earth and yet in unbelief rejected God’s Son as King at His first coming from Heaven to earth!

And then the second question that might have arisen in the mind of some readers is: If the Kingdom of Heaven was not established by God’s Son at His first coming to earth, and since His Sermon on the Mount relates to what God wanted to spiritually see from His subjects in the Kingdom of Heaven, then what is the sense of believers during this present third age of time looking at Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount? In other words, what relevance does it have for us today? And the answer is that Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount is still relevant for us today in that instead of God’s Son being on earth and ruling over the earth at present as King in THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, He is now in Heaven ruling from there as King over the nations of the earth, not now through the nation of Israel, but rather now through all the believers of earth as part of THE KINGDOM OF GOD during the present third age of time! Therefore, the spiritual truth shared in His Sermon is still truth that is applicable to us as believers today also!

This means then is that if the Sermon on the Mount is God’s teaching for His subjects with His Son ruling as King over those who recognize Him as King and willingly subject themselves to His rule, then surely this applies to all the believers of the present third age, who have become His subjects as part of the Kingdom of God on earth from the moment of salvation onward, which therefore means that the Sermon on the Mount surely has application to us also today!

For what we also need to keep in mind is that during the present third age of time, when one becomes a believer, one becomes united to God’s Son now in Heaven, as where He ascended to after His death, burial, and resurrection from the dead here on earth, and where He is now sitting at the right Hand of His Father, reigning as King. And so, whereas the believers would see Him and follow Him and learn from Him while He was here on earth, now we follow Him and learn from God’s Son while He is in Heaven doing so by God’s Holy Spirit indwelling in one’s human spirit since the moment of one’s salvation. This of course means that His teaching then, as when physically visible on earth, is just as relevant now, even though unseen!

A brief mention of Jesus’ Sermon at Luke 6:20-49

We need to note that starting at Luke 6:20, as part of a discourse that The Lord Jesus there gives to His disciples, we read, Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God. Looking at this verse in its context, we see that it is the same occasion as here starting at Matthew 5, being there further informed that it was immediately after the choosing of the twelve apostles, noting Luke 6:13. And what would be instructive here is comparing these two passages, that is, the one here at Matthew 5 to 7 dealing with the Kingdom of Heaven, which will be in place during the fourth age to come; and the one at Luke 6:20-49, dealing with the Kingdom of God, which is in place during the present third age of time.

    And there
