About this ebook

In this book, “God’s prophetic word through Hosea,” God shows Himself as “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness and relenting of evil,” for He “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” This is the way God dealt with people in Hosea’s day and still does in our own also! The book has many spiritual lessons for us to learn.

    INTRODUCTION

There are at least FOUR REASONS why God raised up believers as PROPHETS in the Old Testament. ONE important REASON was to give people God’s word as we see God say to Moses at Deuteronomy 18:18-22, where we read, with capitalization added for emphasis, [18] I will raise up a PROPHET from among their countrymen like you, and I WILL PUT MY WORDS IN HIS MOUTH, AND HE SHALL SPEAK TO THEM ALL THAT I COMMAND HIM. [19] It shall come about that whoever will not listen to MY WORDS WHICH HE SHALL SPEAK IN MY NAME, I Myself will require it of him. [20] But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.' [21] You may say in your heart, 'How will we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?' [22] When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. As we see here, being a prophet of God was serious business, and if one professed to be a prophet and did not speak only God’s word, one would be put to death by God!

A SECOND REASON for God raising believers as prophets in the Old Testament was because God knew that human beings have a sinful nature inherited from Adam, which only wants to sin at all times, this even being true for believers, and so God raised up prophets to bring people to Himself in salvation, or else back to Himself, if they had gone astray, as we see for instance at Jeremiah 7:25,26, [25] Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I HAVE SENT YOU ALL MY SERVANTS THE PROPHETS, daily rising early and sending them. [26] Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did more evil than their fathers, and also noting what God also says at 2 Chronicles 36:15-16, [15] The Lord, the GOD of their fathers, SENT WORD TO THEM AGAIN AND AGAIN BY HIS MESSENGERS, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place; [16] but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at HIS PROPHETS, UNTIL THE WRATH OF THE LORD AROSE against His people, UNTIL THERE WAS NO REMEDY.

Then a THIRD REASON why God raised prophets in the Old Testament was to FORETELL THE FUTURE and especially tell people about HIS COMING SON, Whom God’s word as a whole pointed to, noting for instance what God’s Son Himself said at John 5:39, You search THE SCRIPTURES because you think that in them you have eternal life; IT IS THESE THAT TESTIFY ABOUT ME, and also noting what He also said to His disciples at Luke 24:27, Then beginning with Moses AND WITH ALL THE PROPHETS, HE EXPLAINED TO THEM THE THINGS CONCERNING HIMSELF IN ALL THE SCRIPTURES.

And then a FOURTH REASON for God raising believers as prophets in the Old Testament was so that we, who are believers today, might be blessed in having God’s word handed down to us, for let us note what God says at Romans 15:4, FOR WHATEVER WAS WRITEN IN EARLIER TIMES WAS WRITTEN FOR OUR INSTRUCTION, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope, and then further noting what God says at 1 Corinthians 10: 6,11, where we read, [6] Now these things happened AS EXAMPLES FOR US, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved... [11] Now these things happened to them AS AN EXAMPLE, AND THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR OUR INSTRUCTION, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. Those believers who wrote those things down for us are the prophets of the Old Testament!

There are three things that one should be aware of at the outset. The first is that the Biblical text that God gave will be included as part of the text of this book, so that the reader will not have to turn to the Bible to read that text. It will appear in italics. Then secondly, each chapter has been broken into smaller sections, which will begin with an italicized brief explanation supplied as a help of what is covered in that section. And thirdly, at times comments are supplied by the author, which will be in brackets in the text of God’s word, and also at times capitalization as an additional help to the reader.

There is an Addenda at the back of the book, which has five sections. In Addendum A, we have information regarding the four ages of time. In Addendum B, we have information regarding the two comings from Heaven to earth of God’s Son in time. Then in Addendum C, we have important information on the nation of Israel; and in Addendum D, we have an exposition of Daniel 9:24-27. And then in Addendum E, we have a presentation of the gospel, which is the good news that God has given in His word regarding His Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, for any reader who might not have as yet this vital personal relationship with God, through faith in His Son.

What should also be mentioned before closing this Introduction, because we are all somewhat curious by nature, is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering and Management in the Corporate offices of two large utilities, God called His servant as a non-denominational evangelist in early 1999, and then sent him out over two thousand miles, away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, which is where His servant has been, and is still serving Him, as evangelist, author, and counselor. The author is a widower with three adopted children, all now married with a family of their own.

Since the author’s two websites are no longer active, one may access the books, and places to purchase, by typing Roger Henri Trepanier, books in any search engine. This book, and all the author’s books, are available for purchase in print format or as an eBook on all major distribution channels.

And please keep in mind that ALL the author’s books are BIBLICAL, in the sense that they look at people and events from a Biblical worldview, and also often from a prophetic standpoint! And so, even though a book may look at a President Trump, or current events, it is never from a political standpoint, but always from a Biblical standpoint!

And now my prayer is that God will richly bless you as you read this book, and greatly minister to every need in your life, as only God can! To Him be all praise, honor, and glory, with thanksgiving, both now and forevermore! Amen.

    HOSEA CHAPTER ONE

    Verses 1:1-11

    Hosea 1:1, Introduction

As we begin, let us note what God tells us at Hosea 1:1, where we have God’s introduction to His prophetic word through Hosea, The word of the Lord which came to Hosea the son of Beeri, during the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

There are a number of truths that God makes known in His introduction, as He begins His prophetic word through Hosea. The first truth God tells us is that He gave this prophetic word through Hosea, who is mentioned by name three times in God’s word, here at Hosea 1:1,2 and also at Romans 9:25, where the apostle Paul was led of God to quote from Hosea 1:10 and also Hosea 2:23. The apostle Peter also partially quotes him at 1 Peter 2:10, although Hosea is not there mentioned by name.

And in order to help us identify the right person in His word, God most often says as He does here, Hosea, the son of Beeri, which would have been Hosea’s father. God does not in Hosea’s case tell us where he was from, although he would most likely have been a resident of the Southern kingdom of Judah, even though God’s primary focus throughout this prophetic word through Hosea was to THE NORTHERN KINGDOM OF ISRAEL!

Then a second truth that God wants us to know here is that The word of the Lord which came to Hosea, was given in order to be transmitted to those God is addressing in the book of Hosea, which is the Southern kingdom of Judah, which word God then led Him to write down after speaking this to him.

Hosea would be regarded as a prophet here due to being a chosen instrument of God that He spoke to others through. It would help our understanding of this if we note two truths in particular that God says of prophets in His word, noting first what we read at Jeremiah 25:4, And the Lord has sent to you all His servants the prophets again and again, but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear… and also noting what we read at Amos 3:7,8b, [7] Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants the prophets. [8b] The Lord God has spoken! Who can but prophesy? And so, what God speaks through one of His prophets, that is His prophetic word and would mean that His prophet was prophesying when transmitting God’s word to its intended recipients!

And then a third truth God shares in this introduction here is that God spoke through Hosea during the reigns of four kings from the Southern kingdom of Judah, who were Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, and during the reign of one king from the Northern kingdom of Israel, who was Jeroboam the son of Joash. God has to identify which Jeroboam He has in view here due to the fact that the first king of the Northern kingdom of Israel was also named ‘Jeroboam,’ who was the son of Nebat, noting 1 Kings 11:26 to 12:20.

We should speak briefly about the kings that God mentions at verse 1:1 as part of His introduction. God gives us a good account of the reign of king Uzziah of Judah at 2 Chronicles 26:1-23. Briefly, we can say here that he came to power at 16 years of age, after succeeding his father Amaziah to the throne, and reigned for 52 years in Jerusalem. He was a believer, but later in life he became proud and incurred the judgment of God, who gave him leprosy, with which he died.

As to king Jotham, also of the Southern kingdom of Judah, God gives us an account of him at 2 Kings 15:32-38 and also at 2 Chronicles 27:1-9. Briefly, we can say he was the son of king Uzziah, was 16 when he came to the throne and reigned 28 years in Jerusalem. He was a believer like his father, but would not attend the temple during his reign and the people of Judah were allowed to act corruptly!

Then as to king Ahaz, also of the Southern kingdom of Judah, God gives us an account of him at 2 Kings 16:1-20; at 2 Chronicles 28:1-27; and also at Isaiah 7:1-17. Briefly, we can say that Ahaz was 20 years old when he came to the throne and reigned 16 years in Jerusalem after Jotham his father died. Ahaz was an unbeliever and it was he who first contacted the Assyrians to come to deliver him form his enemies, instead of relying on God.

As to king Hezekiah, also of the Southern kingdom of
