INTRODUCTION

A little while ago, I was having a conversation with a friend who professes to be a believer, but who denies that we are close to the return from Heaven to earth of God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ. From his perspective, he does not see that happening any time soon. I tried to give him reasons why I believed that The Lord Jesus’ return was near, but it did not seem to convince him. And I am afraid that this man is not alone in believing as he does in this matter!

And so, the other day, when I asked God what book He wanted to see written next, He brought this title to His servant’s heart and mind, Discerning The Signs of The Times! This is no doubt a very important subject for us to look at, for it is based on what God’s Son said at Matthew 16:1-3, as what people should be doing, noting what we there read, [1] The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. [2] But He replied to them, When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' [3] And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' DO YOU KNOW HOW TO DISCERN THE APPEARANCE OF THE SKY, BUT CANNOT DISCERN THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES?" And so, that is what we will be doing in this book, which should bring comfort, encouragement, and peace to readers!

What should also be noted here is that there is an Addenda at the back of the book with five sections. In Addendum A, we have a brief exposition of the four ages of time, for those who might not be familiar with this information. In Addendum B, we have the two separate comings from Heaven to earth of God’s Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, for those who might not be familiar with this information either. Then in Addendum C, we have an exposition of Revelation 13. In Addendum D, we have an exposition of Daniel 9:24-27. And then in Addendum E, we have a presentation of the gospel, which is the good news that God has given in His word regarding His Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, for any reader who might not have as yet this vital personal relationship with God, through faith in His Son.

What should also be mentioned before closing this Introduction, because we are all somewhat curious by nature, is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering and Management in the Corporate offices of two large utilities, God called His servant as a non-denominational evangelist in early 1999, and then sent him out over two thousand miles, away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, which is where His servant has been, and is still serving Him, as evangelist, author, and counselor. The author is a widower with three adopted children, all now married with a family of their own.

CHAPTER ONE

What does God mean when He speaks of the signs of the times?

Let us begin by noting again where God’s Son, while on earth in human flesh at His first coming, mentions the signs of the times, which is at Matthew 16:1-3, where we read, [1] The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. [2] But He replied to them, When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' [3] And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot DISCERN THE SIGNS OF THE TIMES?

The word discern here is the Greek word Diakrino in the original, which means to determine, recognize, perceive, detect, decide, and make a distinction. The word signs is the Greek word Semeion in the original and means a distinguishing mark, the giving of an indication, and an event as a warning or admonition. And the word times is the Greek word Kairos in the original and refers to a fixed or definite period of time, such as the present time.

As an example here, to solidify our thinking on these meanings, we can look at what The Lord Jesus told Peter and John at Luke 22:7-13, when He sent them into the city of Jerusalem to prepare the last Supper they were to have together, there reading, [7] Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread ON WHICH THE PASSOVER LAMB HAD TO BE SACRIFICED. [8] And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it. [9] They said to Him, Where do You want us to prepare it? [10] And He said to them, When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. [11] And you shall say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples? ' [12] And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there. [13] And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

Here we have AN EVENT ON GOD’S CALENDAR, which is when His Son was to observe the Passover with His twelve apostles, which had to be on the fourteenth of the month of Abib at twilight, which was when the sons of Israel were miraculously taken out of the bondage of Egypt by God, noting Exodus 12:1,2,6,11,17; Deuteronomy 16:1.

And so, in coming to the city, Peter and John were to look for the SIGN GIVEN, which was to be a man carrying a pitcher of water. Then to ensure that they were not being mislead, a further SIGN was that there was be a large, furnished upper room. So what Peter and John were to DISCERN were the correct signs given them by God’s Son! And lastly here, we note that this all took place at a specific time. In other words, Peter and John went and did as they were told in the time that was then present! This was not something that was to take place tomorrow or a year from then; it had to occur at the time then current.

If we look at the context of Matthew 16:1-3 above, we there see that the Pharisees and Sadducees were part of the leadership of the nation of Israel, and the unfortunate thing is that they were in UNBELIEF. And so, in coming to God’s Son in human flesh, which they did not believe was so, they ask Him for a sign from Heaven. In other words, they wanted to see something miraculous happen on the pretext that they would then believe in Him, as to Who He really was.

So what the leadership in unbelief failed to do was to DISCERN THE SIGNS THAT GOD HAD ALREADY GIVEN REGARDING HIS COMING SON TO EARTH. For instance, at Genesis 3:15, God had said that He would one day send His Son to earth as born of a woman. Then at Isaiah 7:14, He said that the woman would be a virgin and that the son born to her would be called, Immanuel, which means, ‘God with us.’ And at 1 Chronicles 17:10a-14 and Isaiah 9:7, God had said that His Son would be a descendant of king David. And so on and so forth with many other signs throughout the Old Testament. All the leadership of the nation of Israel had to do was to DISCERN THE SIGNS that God had already given them in His word, and when His Son did come to earth, then they would be able to recognize Him, to believe in Him, and in doing so, they would then have obtained the forgiveness of sins and eternal life with God!

And now the question for us reading this today is: How does this apply to us living at the present time? And the answer to that question is that GOD HAS TWO SIMULTANEOUS EVENTS ON HIS PROPHETIC CALENDAR THAT ARE ABOUT TO OCCUR, AND WHAT HE DESIRES US TO DISCERN, WHO ARE ALIVE AT PRESENT, ARE THE SIGNS THAT HE IS GIVING THAT INDICATES THAT THESE EVENTS ARE CLOSE AND THEREFORE WE SHOULD BE READY!

So what we will now do in the next chapter is to look at those two events, including an outline of the signs that are there for all to see, which indicates that these events are right at the doorstep! Then in the chapters following, we will expand on the signs so that we can have a better grasp of them, in terms of being able to look at the world around us and see that they are indeed all taking place! And in knowing all this, we should order our lives in light of what is coming!

Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.

CHAPTER TWO

The two simultaneous events on God’s calendar that we should be aware of, including ten signs that point to the fact that these events are about to take place!

Those who are familiar with God’s word, especially its prophetic portions (that is, portions relating to the future as foretold in the past), would agree that the two events that are about to occur on the world scene are, one, THE RAPTURE OF THE CHURCH, and two, the start of THE DAY OF THE LORD! Let us now briefly speak about both events in order to understand what is in view as taking place when these events occur.
