April Is Renewal - Sparrow Brooks

    April 1

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

    Psalm 51:10

April showers bring may flowers. It’s a rhyme we all grew up repeating. When I think of April, I think of a few things--Easter, newborn baby animals, my dad’s birthday, and rain--lots of and lots of rain. Of course, I suppose it depends upon where you live whether or not your April is rainy, but in every state where I’ve lived, I’ve expected April to mean showers.

Showers can be a good thing, though. Anyone who has a pollen allergy knows that! Rain washes away the dirt and debris and leaves us clean and refreshed. When I think of April, I like to imagine a nice, cleansing, gentle rain, not a monsoon. I see myself as a little girl, playing outside and splashing in the puddles, coming back inside wet but happy as a clam.

Did you ever do that when you were little? Splash around in the puddles? We had a sidewalk in front of our house but also one that wrapped around the side. I never quite knew the purpose of this walkway that literally butted up to our foundation, but it was great for private puddle jumping sessions. Unlike the public sidewalk that ran in front of our house, no one else could jump these particular puddles (except for my siblings, I suppose, but they didn’t.) No, these puddles were just for me.

Sometimes, God sends rain into our lives that is just for us as well. We look around us, and everyone else seems to be enjoying a sunshiny day while we stand in the deluge. It seems unfair, like everyone else has it easy and we have to put up with storms. In the midst of those times, it’s easy to lose focus and remember that rain serves a purpose. It washes away the dirt and debris, renews our spirit, and helps us to grow. If God sends a raincloud, or allows one to form over your head, try not to focus on the negative. It could be He’s trying to help you reach new heights so that you’re ready for what comes next. Without the rain, there can be no renewal of our spirit, no purification of our hearts.

What is God doing in your life right now? Is the sun shining or is it raining? Are you receptive to His efforts to transform you and make you new again? Talk to Him about it today and let Him know if He sees fit to send you through the storm, you will trust Him to deliver you on the other side.

    rain

    April 2

As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.

    Hosea 6:3

I like predictability. I like to know what’s going to happen and when it’s going to happen. That isn't to say I’m incapable of going with the flow, but given a choice, I would much rather know what’s going to happen then just have to sort of figure it out as we go along.

God is like that in many ways of our lives. Just as the verse says, we can always count on Him, no matter the circumstances. He’ll always be there when He’s meant to be.

We go on vacation to a certain amusement park almost every year. I’ve been more times than I can count, yet every time, I spend a lot of time planning the trip, hoping it will be a good time for everyone. Inevitably, someone ends up crying about something, and there’s just no way to avoid something going wrong. Still, whenever I’m getting ready to go to this magical place, I put in hours of planning in an attempt to make everything perfect. My planning is as assured as the fact that something will not go as planned. That doesn’t prevent me from doing what I’ve always done and making what should be a solid plan.

Regardless of what we are doing, God is going to do His part. He will show up when He’s supposed to--like the spring rain. He will appear
