JULY 1
But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
Jeremiah 29:7
We are so lucky to live in America, the land of opportunity where so many people live in conditions that many other nations in the world are envious of. Of course, there’s poverty here. There’s homelessness and struggles. But for the most part, even our poor have better roofs over their heads than many people around the world. Perhaps most importantly, in the US, we have the opportunity to do better for ourselves if we’re willing to work hard and do what it takes.
I grew up in a small three-bedroom home that my parents paid $12,000 for in 1975. When I was younger, I thought my house was huge. I thought it was nice! I thought I was pretty lucky to live there. I look back now, and I don’t see anything special, but I know how hard my parents worked to provide a nice place for us to live. There are millions of people around the world who would love to live in a little house like that.
Because my parents worked so hard, I was given the opportunity to go to college, something neither of them ever finished. I was given the opportunity to do even better financially for my own children. In America, this is possible. Hopefully, my kids will be even better off financially than I am.
In these trying times, it’s easy to become discouraged, to watch the stock market and see all the money disappearing. But at the end of the day, we have to trust that God will continue to provide for His people. America was founded on a firm belief in God. While we have certainly strayed over the last two hundred years, I believe a great deal of our prosperity is due to the faith many Americans still have in God We need to pray for the welfare of this nation, this place where God has sent us, and repent on a daily basis for all of our transgressions so that God will continue to prosper our people.
Today, thank God for the prosperity you’ve experienced and pray for the people of our country. Pray for those who need financial assistance and guidance. Pray that the next generation earns God’s favor as plentifully as this one so that they can continue to live comfortable lives.

Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!
Psalm 122:7
Security is such a huge concern for many people. For me, I didn’t worry much about anyone breaking in until I had children. Then, it was something that was constantly on my mind.
We have an alarm system at my house, but we don’t always use it. One reason we sometimes don’t is because my daughters often get up first in the morning on the weekends. They’ll forget the alarm is on and open the door to let the dogs out. Whenever the alarm goes off unexpectedly, both of my children freak out! So sometimes, we don’t set the alarm. I tend to worry more on those nights.
It’s reassuring to know that, if someone tried to come into my house while I’m asleep, not only will an alarm blare, but someone is standing by to call for help immediately. I trust our alarm monitoring company with my life and the lives of my children.
Even on nights when my alarm isn’t set, I know that someone is watching over me, though. God is also constantly monitoring my household. I believe He has as much power to run off a criminal as any alarm.
Obviously, America isn’t crime free. There are parts of our great country that have a lot of crime. But we are blessed to have wonderful police officers and others to help keep us safe. I pray every night for those who do their best to keep us from harm--police, deputies, the military, even special agents from divisions of the government I might never hear from. I do feel much safer here than I would in many places in the world.
Today, take time to thank God for providing us the protections He does. Thank Him for the people He’s called to keep others safe. Thank Him for allowing you to live in a place where safety is an expectation for most of the citizens most of the time.
