November Is Thankfulness - Sparrow Brooks

    Introduction

November is one of my favorite months of the year! Not only do we get a reprieve from the warm weather down south (for the most part!) so many special occasions occur in November--particularly Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays!

This is the time of year when I like to pause at least once or twice a day and be thankful for something I normally take for granted--the fact that the lights turn on when I flip a switch, the crisp air outside, the neighbors who wave when they drive by--the little things we might overlook if we’re not being pointed about remembering them.

Through God’s word, this month, I’d like to help remind you of some of those small things. Hopefully, whether your small tokens for which to be gracious are the same as mine or different, you’ll find something to be thankful for every single day in November, and that spirit will last you well into the new year.

    So let’s get to it!

    Thanks

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name!

    Psalm 100:4

Gates are normally something we think about keeping the unwanted out or keeping our loved ones safe. This verse is also a song, and when I read it, or sing it, I think of a grand entrance into a court where God sits on his throne, a long parade of His people coming to thank him for His goodness.

One of my most favorite events in November is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Sadly, it will be different this year (at least it isn’t cancelled!). I love to watch it from beginning to end, sometimes with my family who comes in and out and never sits through the whole thing, often with a slice of pie for breakfast. (I am also blessed that my husband cooks the Thanksgiving meal--more on that in a different post.)

Some people don’t quite understand what I love so much about the parade. I’ve always loved New York City, so that’s part of it, seeing all of those floats and balloons with the backdrop of the majestic Big Apple. Beyond that, it’s the coming together of so many people all to celebrate the blessings of the year and herald in the most wonderful time of the year. I love looking at the creative floats, and the nostalgic balloons, mixed in with the new ones never fails to warm my heart.

Yes, I love the Thanksgiving Day parade!

This is how I envision the event occurring in Psalm 100:4. A train of people, hundreds and thousands of them, marching in together with wide smiles on their faces, singing God’s praises, floats in his honor (dare I say balloons of His most wonderful creations?) all brought to His home, His court, by people so thankful to be in His presence. Wouldn’t it be a remarkable sight to see?

You may not feel the same way about the parade as I do, but I bet there is a group of people in your life that you can pause to appreciate today. Perhaps you can imagine all of your co-workers or your family joining together to sing God’s praises as they enter his gate. Take a few moments today to be thankful for something you might normally overlook--whether it’s a national event like the Macy’s parade that brings you joy, friends who can join hands with you to rejoice, or the fact that you have the ability to sing God’s praises, take time today to thank Him for those blessings.

    Thanks

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre!

    Psalm 147:7

I used to want to be a professional singer when I grew up. Along with being an actress, it was one of my more lofty dreams. My father played guitar in all sorts of bands when I was growing up, everything from Christian to country to rock, and I always wished I could join him on stage. While I was allowed to do that from time to time, most of my singing happened in church. Singing the special was one of the most invigorating parts of going to church for me. It was a few minutes when I was allowed to lift my voice to God and help others to feel the same joy I did whenever I praised His name.

Now that I’m an adult, I have long since given up those dreams of becoming a singer (and an actress). Instead, I am content to be a writer and a mom. However, I still sing on a daily basis. Most of the time, the only ones around to
