October Is Harvest - Sparrow Brooks

    October 1

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.

    Genesis 8:22

A lot has changed in most people’s lives recently. One thing that certainly hasn’t changed is the fact that the sun continues to rise and fall as scheduled every single day. No matter if we’re in self-quarantine, working from home, still going off to work or school, or if our lives are back to normal, the sun and moon are still on the exact schedule Almanacs could’ve foretold decades ago. We can be sure that their schedules will not change, no matter what happens to ours.

The same can be said with the changing of the seasons--though sometimes, where I live, I feel as if summer will never stop! There may be shifts in temperature, mild or more severe seasons, but we know that harvest comes each fall. And where I live, I can always bet on a hot summer!

No matter what men do, how unpredictable the rest of our world might be, we can rely on God. We can be sure that He will always be where we expect Him to be, act how we expect Him to act, and love us as He has promised to love us. October is the time of year when we think of pumpkins and bonfires, falling leaves and pulling sweaters out of the closet. We can be fairly confident that October will be the same from one year to the next, assuming we stay in the same place. No matter where we are, we can be sure that God will be the same from one season to the next, from one day to the next, from one moment to the next.

I remember one year when I was about twelve we had a particularly odd winter where it never really seemed to get cold. We wore jackets, but I don’t think we got our heavy coats out for more than a day or two. It was really strange. Sometimes, everything in life can be a bit unpredictable. The next year, however, things returned to the way they should be, and we got just as much ice and snow as we always did. Even the weather might fool us from time to time, but God doesn’t.

As the world gets a little colder, the days get a little shorter and darker, and we prepare ourselves for the long winter ahead, isn’t it a comfort to know that God hasn’t changed? That He’ll always be there for us? Just like that snuggly sweater you’ll be pulling out of the closet soon enough, God wraps around us and comforts us from the rest of the world.

Today, take a few moments to thank God for being a constant, for being predictable, for being a comfort for you. Let Him know how much you love Him and how ready you are to make this autumn a time when you’ll bring in the harvest for Him.

They do not say in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’

    Jeremiah 5:24

Is the fall rainy where you live? It can be around here, but it’s nothing like when I lived in Houston. We didn’t have much of a fall there, and basically every day was rainy, no matter the season. As a kindergarten teacher, I’d have the children go check the weather everyday. There was a pretty good chance it was going to be rainy most days, especially if we checked in the afternoon!

Some people love rain while others despise it. Personally, I love listening to a gentle rain, but I hate getting caught in the rain. To me, being wet is so uncomfortable (unless I’m in a pool or the shower!) I avoid it as much as possible.

One day when I was leaving work a few years ago, it was raining buckets, and I’d forgotten my umbrella. My oldest daughter was with me. At the time, she was only five. She didn’t want to run with Mommy to the car, and I couldn’t blame her. Mommy didn’t want to run to the car either! I had a coworker with an umbrella waiting by the door for a ride. I remember asking her if she’d mind letting my daughter use it to get into the car if I moved my car near the door and if I would bring it back to her. Man, she did not want to let me borrow that umbrella! It was so bizarre how she was reluctant to let us borrow it. Eventually, someone else came along and was happy to let me use hers to get my kindergartner in the car. To this day, whenever it’s raining buckets, I wonder why that woman wouldn’t let me borrow her umbrella…. Perhaps she’d had someone run away with her umbrella once before and had umbrella trust issues. I’ll probably never know, but it seemed strange to me.

Sometimes the rain is a nuisance. But when we see what it does for the plants, for our yards and the dirt
